Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

-->
It was a more relaxed Cat & Brat this week, having recovered from last week’s 3D Radiothon marathon, but still, we hit the ground running as per the Gordon Gano song we began with! There was new music from the likes of UK songstress Suzi Chunk, Japan’s Tenniscoats and Adelaide’s Volcano Cleaner, with the latest single from Django Django and a track from Wizards of Time’s intriguing debut, plus interesting covers of songs written by the likes of Bowie and the Rutles... there was a 1971 New Zealand Top 10 chart hit by Timberjack as well as tunes from the more recent past by Painted Hills, Pugwash and the Scoundrelles plus much more, before we finished the show with a very humorous song by Baterz in his final appearance as our “Artiste of the Month”.....

Obscured By...

We had Blue Jays, Duck, Dragon, Canaries and Matching Mole.  We had a Wheelbarrow and a US radio star asking what a girl is.  The resuscitated Aztec Music provided some rare live Normie Rowe, while John Laws just wanted us to be kind to each other.  We said goodbye to Col Joye's Joy Boys drummer John Bogie, and heard some latter-day Ray Hoff, from only the second (and final) album of his long career.  Nigerian prog and Malaysian punk.  A Nazi-era German propaganda swing band and the whimsy of George Formby.  Brand new Bob Dylan.  Dare you to name another show besides Obscured By... (this week hosted by Michael Hunter) that would provide such a musical smorgasbord.  Can't, can you...?

Technicolour Dreaming

This week the Cat & the Brat curated the annual RADIOTHON (extended) edition of Technicolour Dreaming and we would like to thank the many listeners and bands who have subscribed to this fine station, helping to keep 3D Radio (and us!) on-air to play music you won’t hear anywhere else in this city (and indeed few places elsewhere!) and to expose and promote local and Australian music to the wider world, whether it be the latest releases or almost-forgotten 60’s singles, and all stops in between. Apropos of this, we played new tracks from Melbourne’s Pony Face, Perth’s Tame Impala off-shoot Pond and the soon-to-be-released EP by the Dunes, 60’s singles by the Loved Ones, Chris Malcolm, the Purple Hearts and the final release by the Twilights, throwing in 80’s Adelaide icons Toyland and the Spikes, an early brillig album track and a couple of surf instrumentals by Slingshot Dragster and DieselWitch along the way. Casting our net wider, we also played tracks from new releases by Sleepy Suns, Ty Segall and Asteroid No 4, as well as a ‘promo-teaser’ from the Galileo 7, (featuring Medway legend Allan Crockford of the Prisoners, Thee Headcoats etc) from their debut LP, due for release in September on State Records – the cover is worth the price alone! (check it out at  http://thegalileo7.fourfour.com/home  ) Finally, after two and a half hours of music plus Radiothon messages and giveaways, we ended the show with a song from the brilliant Baterz, our currentArtiste of the Month”..... and don’t forget, it’s not too late to subscribe to 3D Radio (and go into the prize draw!) – just go to  http://threedradio.com  for details!

A special radiothon edition of Obscured By... with all three dots in fundraising mood.  Special guest from Melbourne via telephone was Nick from the Molting Vultures talking about life and music in his new home city - and the importance of bands supporting community radio.  We could only agree.  The playlist is as below, and shows the usual diversity of time, place and genre - and indeed therefore the importance of EVERYONE supporting Three D if at all possible, to keep the musical obscurity flowing!

Technicolour Dreaming

As we gear up here for next week’s 3D Radiothon 2012, we felt we should up the local and Australian quotient in preparation, which was easy since there were so many new releases fitting that bill which demanded to be played! There were new singles from King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard and the Demon Parade, EPs from a bunch of local acts including the Sunbirds, Steering By Stars and Sleeptalker, as well as albums from Wolfmother/redsunband offshoot Good Heavens and the Laurels. But it was not all new stuff... as always, we parted the mists of time and played lost gems by Lotus, the Psychedelic Furs and Echo & the Bunnymen, plus a track by the Popinjays from their 1992 ‘coversEP,and one from Canada’s High Dials, taken from Psychedelica 4, the most recent of Northern Star Records excellent compilation series before finishing with our currentArtiste of the Month”, the late great Baterz.....

Obscured By...

Burt Ward (60s TV's Robin) sang a song about himself, written by Frank Zappa.  A creative soundscape based on crank phone calls was provided by Brendon Locher.  Mexican bands performed covers of well known hits in their own language.  Penetration covered Patti Smith while Tin Huey did a Monkees song.  The last line-up of Esperanto creatively arranged Eleanor Rigby, and The "A" Sound had a very young Doug Parkinson's first appearance on record.  Mother Goose were just odd. Psychedelia abounded.  Need we say more - it was another Obscured By... with Cat and Brat and Michael Hunter.   Incident report as follows...

The Kinetics - Excuses  (7”single 1966 Aust)
The "A" Sound - Talk About That  (7”single 1966 Aust)
Autumn - Just Couldn't Believe It   (7”single 1972 Aust, also on CD reissue of 'Comes...Autumn')

Mother Goose - See If I Care  (‘Stuffed' 1977 NZ)

Burt Ward - Boy Wonder I Love You  (7”single 1966 US)

The Stained Glass - My Buddy Sin  (7”single 1966 US)

Technicolour Dreaming

Sometimes there are highlights on Technicolour Dreaming that are selected for any number of reasons. Take, for instance, the Merry-Go-Round“Listen, Listen” is a great slice of pop-perfection, but take a look at those groovy clothes!! (our clip shows their ill-fated appearance on “the Dating Game” in 1967).  New London outfit Weird Dreams made the grade due to their sheer delicious musical wooziness, and seeing as it had been stuck in our heads all week, we just had to play the catchy trackLucifer” by the Salt (in reality a studio-only band headed by Joey Levine, who also made Chewy, Chewy and Yummy, Yummy, Yummy!) Other picks included a Kim Fowley classic, co-written with Michael Lloyd of the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band (who coincidentally also played with the late Darryl Cotton, as featured in last week’s tribute), and cool cover versions by the Barbarellatones and the Church (of Jan and Dean, and Hawkwind, respectively). The Adelaide artists featured this week included local legends the Dagoes and Lizard Train and, of course, the late great Baterz, our current “Artiste of the Month,” who concluded the set.
