Technicolour Dreaming

The new Brian Jonestown Massacre album came into our P.O. box this week so, needless to say, we felt it was a fine way to begin this week’s show before we moved into our trawl through the wonderful world of psychedelia. Also featured this week were tracks from a couple of cool Russian bands, Mystic Brew and the Spoon Box, with more to follow in coming weeks from what appears to be a very vibrant psych scene... special thanks to Dimitry of Mystic Brew for putting us onto some of the great bands there! Northern Europe also provided us with tracks by such Scandinavian bands as Octopus Syng and the Jessica Fletchers plus, from Poland, the White Kites, while from the Philippines we played D’Swooners, as well as a bunch from the USA and Britain including Flavor Crystals and Jeffertitti’s Nile from the former and Scars, the Open Mind and Schnauser from the latter, not forgetting Australia’s entries, Shining Bird and Subtract-S and New Zealand’s the Avengers, who did a great cover of “Listen, Listen”, which has to be one of our favourite 60’s classics! Technicolour Dreaming

Lots of music was played this week from all around the world, some new, some older, but all interesting. Amongst them, from Moscow we heard the excellent new single by Mystic Brew, from Tokyo a track off of Kikagaku Moyo’s 2013 debut album, from Chicago we heard the Luck of Eden Hall and Secret Colours, as well as a single by the Hedgehogs from Denmark, Blondi’s Salvation from Nantes in France with a song from their new “Crusades” album, plus the UK’s Elephant Stone and Chile’s Föllakzoid,  both with a track from their respective debuts, and not forgetting a few 60’s gems such as Scott Walker’s “The Amorous Humphrey Plugg” for good measure. We were saddened this week by the passing of the Masters Apprentices’ singer Jim Keays, the only constant member of the band from their early days here in Adelaide through to their final recordings many years later in London. I was fortunate enough to know Jim in the early ‘70’s and even play in a band with him for a while – being a teenager I was slightly in awe of him as a rock hero, but he always just treated me as a fellow musician which was a good lesson to learn – famous people are still just ‘people’ after all. Jim continued playing until this year and recently released a great new album of 60’s garage covers – a fine last release! However, we chose to play his 1971 ode to another psychedelicist, “Our Friend Owsley Stanley III” not just as a tribute to him but also to Swedish psychedelic philosopher Patrick Lundborg, who also died suddenly this week. He was a well-known music-writer and author, most well-known for his “Acid Archives” compendium, his recent opus “Psychedelia : an ancient culture, a modern way of life”, his articles in Shindig!, Ugly Things, Mojo and other magazines, plus his website of everything psychedelic at http://www.lysergia.com . Both will be sorely missed!

Technicolour Dreaming

Amongst the new releases featured this week on the show was the Junipers “Euphonius Trolley EP”, their pop-psych side-project, and if the track we played, “My Budgerigar (is addicted to rasmalai)”, is any indication, we can only hope they pursue this direction further and put out a full album – we loved it!  Do check it out! Also featured were new tracks from the Horrors, the Roaring 420’s, Kikagaku Moyo and Octopus Syng, plus two French favourites, Sudden Death of Stars and Forever Pavot. Older music was not forgotten, of course, ranging from 60’s singles by Ola & the Janglers, the Dave Miller Set and Rhubarb Rhubarb, with a 70’s recording by the Left Banke, through to more recent tracks by the likes of Psychic Ills, Gold Paint and from 1990, the debut single by Cat & Brat faves, the Luck of Eden Hall. We also featured another track by Adelaide’s own Twilights and you’ll find Part 2 of the pilot of their ill-fated TV series attached for your viewing pleasure. So, until next week.....

Technicolour Dreaming

We always play bands from around the world but this week a large percentage of the music came from Australia, our home turf, yet it wasn’t planned – it just happened that way, and even included a brilliant new track from local Adelaide band Glass Skies, a taster from their forthcoming EP. There were tracks from new bands such as Tasmania’s Violet Swells and the Babe Rainbow who hail from Brisbane, plus some old favourites such as the Laurels, the Lovetones, Black Cab and the Citradels. Moving out into the wider world, we heard from Sweden’s Tor-Peders, Japan’s Kikagaku Moyo, Wales’ Crystal Jacqueline and Finland’s Octopus Syng, as well as other current favourites such as the Luck of Eden Hall, les Limiñanas and Holy Wave plus lots more. All in all, another burst of Technicolour Dreaming with the Cat & the Brat on Adelaide’s 3D Radio, streaming live to the world.....
