Sitars, theremin and mellotron, backwards guitar, phasing and fuzz, fringes and mohawks, paisley, black, velvet and leather, feedback, bass and drone, beads, berets and safety-pins, Shindig! and Creem, 3 chord wonders, teenage symphonies and snarl, Rickenbacker, Farfisa and 4-track recorders... onstage at CBGB's, Max's Kansas City or the Trip, the Roundhouse, the 100 Club or the Crystal Ballroom, Catcher's, Big Daddy's or the Squatters Arms.... and the Cat and the Brat on 3D Radio!
Three D Radio announcer, MeganCat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat)lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula. Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs onThree D Radio 93.7fm, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station. Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming", watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage, surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Aah, this was the day when everything went wrong... a few minutes into the show and the computer had a hissy-fit, leading to several people pulling plugs in and out, and scrambling around under the desk, trying to find the on/off switch. Needless to say, by the time everything was up and running again, my programming was totally out the window, but at least the music went to air! These are the perils of Community Radio, but on the upside, when everything is operating as it should, we're very lucky to be able to play whatever we fancy (and without endless commercials interrupting the flow), which benefits you, the listener. As a result of the above-mentioned malfunctions, I ended up unintentionally relying on 2 very good compilations (as you'll see below, they feature very strongly in the playlist): Fruits de Mer Records'"Strange Fruit and Veg"compilation, and "Wild About You: A Tribute to the Australian Rock Underground 1963 - 1968". Both releases are collections of cover versions, and very good versions they are too! So here's the playlist, but with limited clips this week...

As promised a few weeks ago, this show featured some more selections from the excellent hard-back book and double CD set "A Seance At Syd's", which has now sold out, unfortunate indeed if you wanted to buy a copy, but great for Mega Dodo Records, who released the package. The 300-page book, which was written by Dave Thompson, is described as "an anthology of modern acid-folk-haunt-psych-prog-space-kraut-radiophonic-rock etc quotes, words, wit and wisdom." Over 80 different performers, bands, record label heads and artists participated in the project, and it's a very entertaining read about life in the music industry, among other topics, with the 40 tracks across the 2 CD's acting as a soundtrack to your reading experience. A pleasure to listen to and read, with some fantastic discoveries, and re-discoveries made in the process!
Another new favourite that's just popped up on my radar, is Orgasmo Sonore, aka Frank Rideau, via his track "Turkish Psych" which appeared on the last Active Listener compilation. His latest release "Revisiting Obscure Library Music" is the most recent in a series of 4 LP's of interpretations of obscure soundtracks and other instrumentals, with the track I played taken from the upcoming LP "Themes International" due out any week now. Check him out, you won't be sorry! So here's the playlist, with moving pictures and stuff...

Sometimes this blog comes together so easily, other times it is exceptionallytesting. This is one of those testing times! I really must apologise for the appallingly long time between posts, as well as the gaps in shows appearing on the blog. Been having some “technical difficulties” lately with a new system being used at Three D for the logging of songs played on the show, and it’s compatibility with Blogger, so if the formatting is all a bit skewed, you’ll know why. The missing shows from the past few weeks will be appearing as soon as I can get them sorted out.
So without further ado, here’s what was played…
Daughters of Albion - John Flip Lockup (medley) (“Daughters of Albion” LP 1968 USA)
Allah Lahs – Artifact (“Worship the Sun” 2015 Scotland, UK)
Halasan Bazar - Scroll Down (“How to be Ever Happy” 2012 Copenhagen, Denmark)
