Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

I featured a couple of cool compilations on this week's show - the "Close to the Hedge" compilation from 2013 and the new "Get Ready to Fly: Pop-Psych From the Norman Petty Vaults"neither of which unfortunately proved to have many film-clips associated with it (can't have everything, I 'spose!). The former is a Pink Hedgehog Records (from Weymouth, UK) release available thru Bandcamp; and the latter a selection of the American producer's pop-psych work from the late 60's to early 70's. Both definitely worth checking out. And the latest song to get stuck in my head is Anton Barbeau's ''Heavy Psychedelic Toilet"!!! Such is life.....

Technicolour Dreaming

I seem to have a penchant for playing songs, albums, and even bands with extremely long titles - an occupational hazard when it comes to announcing them without tripping over my tongue. The prize for the longest title of a release this week (but only just) goes to one of Fruits De Mer's latest batch of coloured 7 inch's - "The Fruits de Mer Records Guide to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" (phew!), featuring three very different interpretations of the classic sci-fi TV show theme "Journey of the Sorcerer" (written by The Eagles, no less!) by Astralasia, The Blue Giant Zeta Puppies, and Icarus Peel. Another new one from FdM is Vibravoid's take on the Iron Butterfly classic "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" - all 15 minutes' worth, handily split into two-parts, all the better to fit on a 7" (I only played Part 1, I'm sure much to the relief of some listeners!). A pre-release track from Elephant Stone's long-awaited album "Ship Of Fools" (due out in September) was a welcome teaser; and the brand-spanking new debut from Brisbane's Sacred Shrines, "Come Down From the Mountain" exceeded expectations. I wonder what's in store next week...??

Donovan - Season of the Witch ("Sunshine Superman" LP 1966 UK)
Magic Bus - Cosmic Rays of Dawn ("Transmission From Sogmore's Garden" 2014 Devon, UK)

Fire - Flies Like a Bird ("The Magic Shoemaker" LP 1970 UK)
Sacred Shrines - Curious Chemistry ("Come Down From the Mountain" 2016 Brisbane, Australia)

Lou Reed - Lady Day ("Berlin" LP 1973 USA)
Icarus Peel - Catch Your Breath ("Forget-Me-Not-Under-Pussy-Willow" LP 2016 [pre-release] Devon, UK)
Blue Giant Zeta Puppies - Journey of the Sorcerer ("The Fruits de Mer Records Guide to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" 7" EP 2016 UK)
Cate Le Bon - I Was Born On The Wrong Day ("Crab Day" 2016 Wales, UK)

Technicolour Dreaming

As promised, this week I featured a veritable plethora of recent, new and soon to be released tracks (well, compared to previous weeks, a few, anyway!) from the likes of Technicolour Dreaming faves The Luck of Eden Hall, Kikagaku Moyo, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and Violet Swells. After a reasonably quiet couple of months, it seems that I hear word of great new stuff every couple of days. Could it be a publicity flurry in advance of Record Store Day on April 16th, or just a coincidence? Who knows, but it's great to see the vinyl resurgence continue to grow, though unfortunately slowed somewhat due to the major labels jumping on the bandwagon with pointless re-issues, and clogging up the pressing plant schedules at the expense of the small independent labels, who were the ones that supported them through the tough times.

So here's the play-list, with even more new stuff in store for the next show...

Billy Nicholls - Girl From New York ("Would You Believe" LP 1968 UK)

Technicolour Dreaming

Very sad to hear that another two legendary musicians have joined the Supergroup in the Sky - and coincidentally on the same day - Jefferson Airplane members Signe Anderson, the original vocalist, and guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Paul Kantner. This intro is rapidly becoming a list of who has died, rather than what I've played on the show - hopefully at least a week will go by without any more major losses....

So here's the playlist for the week, and amazingly with a clip for every song! Enjoy...

Another psychedelic spin around the world from the 1960’s to the present? Yes, it’s another edition of Technicolour Dreaming on 3D Radio 93.7fm, featuring new songs from Lay Llamas, H.Hawkline and Haliewa back to “should-have-been-hits” by the Pretty Things, Ray Brown & the Whispers and Del Shannon, as well as a couple more tracks from Fruits de Mer's "A Momentary Lapse of Vinyl" compilation.
