Technicolour Dreaming

The Brat was ‘flying solo’ for this edition of Technicolour Dreaming, but was not alone in the 3D studio... Seth Sutton from the USA, who records under the banner of Useless Eaters, plus Jack Petty, a member of his touring band, were guest DJs on this week’s show, prior to their gig later that night at the Metro. They came armed with a large box of vinyl to plunder, including  Useless Eaters latest 7”, a Viva la American Death Ray song, a reissue of Figure of Light’s 1972 single, classics from God and the Pretty Things and lots more... plus we spun Adelaide bands Rule of Thirds and Big Richard Insect, who were playing the Metro show as well... Also featured this week were a few of the current wave of American garage/psych purveyors such as Moon Duo, Lumerians and Ty Segall, before we ended with local outfit Brillig, our current “Band of the Month”. So a good time was had by all... but I do hope the Cat returns to the airwaves next week!

Obscured By...

So obscure, it was:

a) brand new, only delivered to the station during the show (local band Alpha Beta Fox),

b) an unusual US act who took his lyrics from the Adult Personals section of his local paper (Amil Byleckie),

c) a little-heard B-side (Galadriel, Whistler's Mother, Bill Fay, Sparks etc.),

d) an early recording by a Czech band who were not allowed to record or legally perform during the first 5 years of their existence (Uz Jsme Doma),

e) late 70s UK punk from the Beggars Banquet label (The Doll, The Lurkers, Tubeway Army),

f) hard to find a performance video for!

Technicolour Dreaming

There was quite an influx into the 3D library for us to plunder this week, with new releases from the likes of Place of Indigo, SMRTS and local outfit Sparkspitter, with the new CD from Fluffy actually hand-delivered to us during the show, meaning of course an instant spin for one of our favourite bands! Needless to say though, the past was not ignored, with tracks from the New York Dolls, the Byrds and the Masters Apprentices, plus a gem from the final Walker Brothers album. Finally, we debuted Brillig as our November “Band of the Month” by playing their very cool take on TV’s “Monkey” theme from 2003.....

Obscured By...

With all three DOTS on board again this week, it was another excursion into the absorbingly odd world of rare, forgotten and overlooked music that we so enjoy sharing with you... music such as an unreleased Gary Young [Daddy Cool et al] track or a bunch of exceedingly obscure 1960’s singles from bands such as Adelaide’s Bentbeaks or the UK’s David McNeil, not to mention the plethora of B-sides (often superior to the A-sides!) from the likes of the Gibsons and Vivien Goldman (the dub version of which we played recently). And let’s not forget the Stranglers’ Swedish language version of “Sweden (All Quiet on the Eastern Front)” and other obscure delights from faraway places such as tracks from Hungarian band Omega’s 1968 debut LP, Germany’s Emtidi and Japan’s wittily (?) named Flied Egg. Ah yes, business as usual here in “Obscured by...”–land!
