Technicolour Dreaming

The Cat & the Brat again brought a mixture of genres and eras to the airwaves this week, including, of course, some diverse psychedelia from the likes of the Rainbow Ffolly, Sundial, Jacco Gardner and Beaulieu Porch, power pop from the Knickerbockers  and Adelaide’s own Arch Menaces, plus some 70’s German bands such as Gila and Electric Sandwich. There were a bunch of singles, primarily b-sides, from Paul Jones, the Syn, the Market Squares and more – slabs of vinyl genius. We have included amongst the clips we chose this week, Part 1 of “The Modern Antiquarian” doco by ‘arch-druid’ Julian Cope – the other parts are linked to this one – as we couldn’t find an original video of our chosen track ‘Sunspots’ from the time it was recorded, but thought that some Cope-archaeology-spieling was a rather good alternative....

Technicolour Dreaming

Beginning the show with Canadian band Rings and Things’ single from 1968 and finishing with a recent album track by the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, we continued this week on our quest for what they called “groovy sounds” back in the 1960’s, exploring various genres and locations, from then until now – all vaguely linked to the psychedelic in some way – from the whispering gothic drones of Adelaide’s All The Leaves Have Fallen, through Jacques Dutronc’s fuzzed-out French epistles to the shimmering pop of brilliant young Dutchman Jacco Gardner and from the equally woozy psychedelia of Beaulieu Porch to the 60’s weird of the Astral Scene and onto the sharp power-pop of Adelaide’s Arch Menaces. We also included this week our occasional ‘feature song’ segment, playing first the original and then a cover version, in this case “No Silver Bird”, originally by the Hooterville Trolley and recently recorded by Germany’s Vibravoid. Of course there was much more, so.....

Technicolour Dreaming

Joining the Cat & the Brat for this week’s show was our ‘Obscured by...’ co-DOT  Michael Hunter, who brought in some interesting items to share, including a bizarre one by Estonian band Winny Puhh, two versions of the song ‘You Never Know’, both from 1975, and a Steve Kilbey demo from his pre-Church days in Canberra. We also featured a sitar-drenched track from the brand-new EP by the Mynd Gardeners, a song from the latest Citradels recordings and another taster from the just-released Paul Messis LP, plus a few French 60’s delights from the likes of Claude Francois and Antoine, as well as playing a track in remembrance of Divinyls’ singer Chrissie Amphlett, who has passed away after a long illness..... Of course there were the regular nods to both 60’s and current psych from bands such as Pisces and Life On Earth! respectively, with oddities such as Giles, Giles & Fripp thrown in for good measure... all in all, another Technicolour Dream....
