Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

And so here it is... after six years of ‘drive-time radio’, we have the final Wednesday evening edition of Technicolour Dreaming. But it’s a consolidation, not some doomsday pronouncement... the Cat & the Brat will return on Tuesday, the first day of 2013, with an all-new version, rolling our two shows into one woozy, psychedelic, obscurity-filled noise-fest for your aural delectation! We will be combining our latest psych/surf/garage/electronic/pop faves with a generous helping of the weird & wonderful [dare we say obscurities?] of yesteryear, both from home and faraway shores plus the occasional interview and ‘live in the studio’ performance, as is our wont. And our dear former co-DOT, Mr Michael Hunter, will be dropping in from time to time to throw a few rarities/oddities your way... so it really is a case of “plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose ”, but in a good way!! In the meantime, feast your ears & eyes on the playlist/clips below from this last show where we played a bunch of our picks from 2012 including Pony Face, Los Liminanas and Ty Segall as well as all-time greats such as Sparks, Wooden Shjips and the Seeds before our finalArtist of the Month” choice, Scott Walker, provided the melodious soundtrack to our getaway......

Ch-ch-ch-changes.

As you may have heard, mutually agreed changes are afoot with the shows.  This week's Technicolour Dreaming and Obscured By... are the last in the current format.

As from January 1 2013, the two shows will be combined into one, in the Tuesday 2-4pm (Adelaide time) timeslot that till now was occupied by Obscured By...

It will now be a musical combination of the shows as well - psych, surf, punk etc etc, new and old, as you've come to know and love.  Obscurities and 60s Australian rock won't be forgotten either.

The new show will usually be hosted by The Cat & The Brat, with Michael Hunter joining in as needs be!  However - we're thinking it needs a new name to go with the other changes; something memorable and appropriate to the styles played.  Because that's usually the hardest part of the process, any suggestions will be welcome!  Please just put any such ideas as a comment to this post.

If we go with a suggestion from here, the lucky winner will get to listen to the show for free!!  (OK yes, that's the best we can do, but think of the bragging rights too...)

In any case, keep listening Tues 2 to 4, Three D Radio 93.7FM and streaming all over the web!

Technicolour Dreaming

So here we are.... the date? 12/12/12.... the penultimate Technicolour Dreaming, both for this year and for the Wednesday time-slot and current format – we will be starting anew on the first day of 2013 – but more of that next week... first you may like to know what was featured this week? We played some tracks from UK label State Records’ roster, which includes the Higher State and the Hidden Masters [check out the short film about the label], there was an Antipodean take on a Nuggets classic, a “1960’s fake” on a 1980’s single by Thee Wylde Main-iacs (exact date unknown – the single purports to be from 1966, but apparently isn’t!), some genuine modern garage/psych from Thee Oh Sees, another track from Moon Duo’s brilliant latest, some local organ weirdness (is that the brown note?) from Horrahedd, an ode to pop from Denmark’s Surf School Dropouts, and finally, of course, another song by Scott Walker, our current “Artist of the Month” ... all these goodies and more brought to you for your listening pleasure by the Cat & the Brat.....

Obscured By...

What did the penultimate show in the current format have in store?  Well, there were folky Beatles covers and some rather lengthy tracks by Godley & Creme and Robert Wyatt (or a previously unreleased extended version in the latter case).  There was some rare "prog pop" for the want of a better term, from a little known 60s Boston band with the wonderful name of Phluph.  Also, brand new Scott Walker and a  Market Square track yet to see release.  Mask featured ex-Curved Air singer Sonja Kristina in a different format.  And... the rest is as mentioned below, painstakingly prepared by Michael Hunter & Cat and Brat.

Technicolour Dreaming

Paul D [from 3D Radio’s “the B-Side”] curated this week’s edition of Technicolour Dreaming in the absence of the Cat & the Brat... and what a great program! Obscured By...

The new collection of "Antipodean" Nuggets CDs is still proving to be very plunderable, and so they began and concluded this week's Obscured By..., hosted by a solo Michael Hunter.  In between was the expected mix of old and new / near and far - and the just a little odd.  For the latter, look no further than Jonathan & Darlene Edwards (the less-talented alter egos of Jo Stafford & Paul Weston) deconstructing I Am Woman.  Some fine Greek pop and a frenzied accordion-led Purple Haze by Svetlyo Zhilev added to the mix, along with a near-half hour long track from the new Neil Young with Crazy Horse CD!  US singer/songwriter/cellist Ben Sollee, who will be a guest on the show in mid-January, showed what he's capable of - and the rest of the musical menu can be savoured below...
