Technicolour Dreaming

As regular listeners to this show are probably aware, the Cat & the Brat are very fond of compilations, and this week saw the arrival in our letterbox of the latest in the Psychedelica series from Northern Star Records in the UK. Like the previous editions, the double-CD Psychedelica 5 is a wonderful treasure trove of psychedelic-related music from around the world, so, needless to say, we will be plundering its delights mercilessly over coming weeks, starting, on this show, with selections from Iceland’s Singapore Sling, the Lost Rivers from Germany and a cool slice of girl-group grooviness by the Silhouettes. This put us in the mood for other comps and boxsets and so we featured songs by Truth, the Majority, the Ballroom and more, all taken from variously compiled sources [details below!] plus a smattering of tunes by the likes of Life Coach, the Move, the Citradels and the Higher State, amongst others...

Technicolour Dreaming

And so here it is... after six years of ‘drive-time radio’, we have the final Wednesday evening edition of Technicolour Dreaming. But it’s a consolidation, not some doomsday pronouncement... the Cat & the Brat will return on Tuesday, the first day of 2013, with an all-new version, rolling our two shows into one woozy, psychedelic, obscurity-filled noise-fest for your aural delectation! We will be combining our latest psych/surf/garage/electronic/pop faves with a generous helping of the weird & wonderful [dare we say obscurities?] of yesteryear, both from home and faraway shores plus the occasional interview and ‘live in the studio’ performance, as is our wont. And our dear former co-DOT, Mr Michael Hunter, will be dropping in from time to time to throw a few rarities/oddities your way... so it really is a case of “plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose ”, but in a good way!! Obscured By...

Sadly, it's almost a case of "another Obscured By..., another RIP", in this instance for Jimmy Little, who passed away the previous day.  To show that obscurities aren't restricted to any era, a collection of rarities from recent years was also featured, along with a few unexpected tracks such as Rick Wakeman attempting to sound like The Buggles!  Check out a pre-fame Boy George in that video, too.   Some UK punk and Australian post-punk was in the mix, along with the usual Australian rarities from the 1960s.  Starting the show with a song called 'The End' seemed an appropriately obscure concept as well.  That's the way it goes in the Obscured By... world, this week curated by Michael Hunter, later joined by both Cat and Brat.
