Sitars, theremin and mellotron, backwards guitar, phasing and fuzz, fringes and mohawks, paisley, black, velvet and leather, feedback, bass and drone, beads, berets and safety-pins, Shindig! and Creem, 3 chord wonders, teenage symphonies and snarl, Rickenbacker, Farfisa and 4-track recorders... onstage at CBGB's, Max's Kansas City or the Trip, the Roundhouse, the 100 Club or the Crystal Ballroom, Catcher's, Big Daddy's or the Squatters Arms.... and the Cat and the Brat on 3D Radio!
Three D Radio announcer, MeganCat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat)lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula. Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs onThree D Radio 93.7fm, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station. Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming", watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage, surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...
Obscured By... alumnus Michael Hunter returned to the Tuesday 2-4pm timeslot for this week, to indulge in some Technicolour Dreaming. Lots of long, psych & related songs from Norway, Sweden, Poland, Australia et al? Check. Also, a 19-minute long jam (or "gauzy lo-fi patina" if you believe their blurb) from Golden Daze and some recently unearthed mid-60s demos from Brisbane bands such as The Down And Out on a limited edition vinyl LP that was released late 2015 and has already sold out! A few local rarities by Headband (soon to be inducted into the SA Music Hall Of Fame) and Some Dream were also included, along with the almost obligatory Beatles cover and the late Jim Keays covering a Cheap Trick song. Normal service will resume next week... Pigeons - Foxglove ("The Bower" 2015 New York, US)
Electric Eye - 1. Bless 2. Heavy Steps On Desert Floor ("Different Sun" 2016 Norway)
McPhee - I Am The Walrus ("McPhee" 1971 Australia)
The Down And Out - I'm Not Talkin' ("Kaptain Kavemen From Brisbane" rec c.1966, released 2015 Australia)
Bobby Dean & The Worried Minds - Take A Look Around ("Kaptain Kavemen From Brisbane" rec c.1966, released 2015 Australia)
Headband - Childrens Dreams ("A Song For Tooley" 1973 Adelaide Australia)
Some Dream - Tunarama (demo 1977 Adelaide Australia)
Theshow started with a French-language version ("Noir C'Est Noir") of a Spanish hit ("Negro Es Negro"), which later became the disco anthem"Black is Black" ... cover versions seemed to be the only unifying factor for the next 2 hours of music, which stylistically wandered all over the place. I don't think that Technicolour Dreaming could ever be accused of being predictable!
Here's the playlist for your edification, with some clips to ponder while wondering what in the world will be on the show next week!
Johnny Hallyday Avec The Blackburds [Los Bravos] - Noir C'Est Noir (7" single 1966 France)

And as a little added extra, an amusing clip of the band "The Smart Alecs", featuring David Hemmings and Steve Marriott, from the 1963 movie "Live It Up!"
It seems that 2007 was a good year for Australian compilations, seeing the release of the excellent "Tomorrow is Today - A Tribute to the Australian Psychedelic Scene 1966-1970", as well as Off The Hip's "Burn Your Fingers on The Sun", both of which are well worth tracking down if you can find a copy. I featured tracks from both comps, as well as Ty Segall's new release "Emotional Mugger", a few classics from the late 60's, and some more recent Australian efforts, plus quite a few cover versions....

Very sad to hear that another twolegendary musicians have joined the Supergroup in the Sky - and coincidentally on the same day - Jefferson Airplane members Signe Anderson, the original vocalist, and guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Paul Kantner. This intro is rapidly becoming a list of who has died, rather than what I've played on the show - hopefully at least a week will go by without any more major losses....
So here's the playlist for the week, and amazingly with a clip for every song! Enjoy...
