Technicolour Dreaming

The last show for May seemed to include quite a few bands from New Zealand, some of whom feature in the great compilation series "A Day in My Mind's Mind: 29 Kiwi Psychedelic Trips 1967-72" which is currently up to Volume 4. Psychedelia seems to have been a bit of a "late bloomer" on the Kiwi music scene, with psych tracks regularly in the charts up until the early 70's. Nowadays one of the cities to watch is Edinburgh, in Scotland - the new compilation "5", released by Dog's Got A Bone Records, is an excellent sample of a diverse range of bands, many unsigned or unreleased elsewhere - check out their sampler back-catalogue for more treats ... and this week's Technicolour Dreaming playlist is listed below:-

Technicolour Dreaming

I was very happy to hear from the guys in Swiss band Borderline Symphony recently - they finally have a brand new, self-titled album out, their first full length release after a number of EPs, so I just had to help spread the word by playing one track each from the new "Borderline Symphony" LP and the older "EP 1". The band is unique in that they sing in German, Italian and English, and in my humble opinion, they're a cross between modern psych-pop and an almost medieval sound - check them out, and you'll see what I mean. I also flogged Dig The Fuzz Records groovy compilation "Astonishing Sound Show Stories Volume 1", with quite a few tracks getting on the playlist this week; they've just released Volume 2, which is heading my way from Spain, so I should have some more to playing in coming weeks ... hope you enjoy my selections below...

Technicolour Dreaming

Cherry Red's new 3 CD box-set "Another Splash of Colour: New Psychedelia in Britain 1980-1985" was a welcome surprise when I arrived at Three D Radio this week, box-sets being a particular weakness of mine, and The Brat was very fond of them, too - there's quite a collection at home! It features lots of familiar names, like Julian Cope, who I opened the show with, but plenty of forgotten about, or just plain obscure bands, so I'm going to enjoy delving into it's treasures over the coming weeks. Technicolour Dreaming

In this internet age, it never fails to surprise me how much music is now available from all over the world, that once wouldn't have been accessible unless you were lucky enough to travel extensively. Bands from Norway, Denmark, New Zealand, Belgium and Spain all appeared on the Technicolour Dreaming playlist this week, along with the usual selections from Australia, France and the USA. But even the most obscure releases from those more familiar countries, especially the ones from the 60's, and once available only to dedicated crate diggers, can now be bought at most on-line shops.
