Technicolour Dreaming

For our “Compilation of the Week” we decided to go with one of our favourite Artist Anthologies – Donovan’s “Try for the Sun : The Journey of Donovan”, a 3 CD + 1 DVD box-set with a 58 page book, released in 2005.  It’s housed in a luscious purple faux-velvet box, so we normally keep it safely locked away to avoid damage, but we couldn’t resist giving it an airing this week. The DVD features a previously unreleased 1970 documentary titled “There Is An Ocean” about Donovan, accompanied by family, friends and band mates, cruising around the Greek Islands on his yacht, stopping to give impromptu performances on the beach to curious onlookers – we couldn’t find it on youtube to show you, but maybe you’ll have better luck. Also this week, we featured pre-releases by California’s Moon Duo and UK band Worthless plus the regular mix of new and old tracks from both Australia and around the world to share with you. Technicolour Dreaming

After last week’s 60’s-fest we thought we’d better catch up with the plethora of new music springing up around the world, though we did slip in a few older songs by the likes of Jacques Dutronc and Donovan, but mostly it was new releases, including a track from the forth-coming new album by Australia’s own King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, new singles released by the UK’s prolific State Records folks by French garage-psychsters Les Grys-Grys and Denmark’s the Youth, a new single by Triptides plus further tracks from the latest Ty Segall, Lorelle Meets The Obsolete, Soft Walls and New Electric Ride offerings. Whew! So much fine new music to choose from... and then we received not one, but TWO new albums from Hawaii-via-Hollywood’s fabulous glam-psych-gothabilly outfit, the Barbarellatones, prompting us to make them the latest Technicolour Dreaming “Band of the Week”. Led by main songwriter, surfer Robbie Quine, and arising from 90’s outfit Sex With Lurch, the band first came to our attention in 2006 with their fantastic “Invasion of the Surf Zombies” album which blended sci-fi, glam, schlock-horror, surf, punk, psych, goth and more in a swirling mix of genres and clever, often amusing lyrics wedded to memorable hooks and lots of twang – all of our favourite things.... how could we not like it? Since then, the ever-prolific band has released a bunch of great albums, with the two we just received in the mail the most recent – if songs like “Poledancer”, “Gothabilly Gulch” and “Truckstop Angel” don’t raise a smile while you start uncontrollably dancing, well....

Technicolour Dreaming

Here on Technicolour Dreaming our mantra is “psych, surf, pop, punk … and more” (the latter being a useful term that covers all bases!), though at times it can be a tough ask to cram in all the songs that we want to play. So little time, with so much amazing music from ‘round the world to play – 2 hours a week is never enough! For example, speaking of amazing music, we debuted a demo track from Copenhagen’s Surf School Dropouts, featuring their trademark soaring Beach-Boy-esque harmonies and slick pop-surf smarts; the guys are hoping that this track will be featured on their forthcoming album, which is planned for release early next year. We had plenty to plunder from Australia too, including a very cool new album from Melbourne’s the Citradels, the solo LP by Matthew J. Tow of the Lovetones, a single from the Ancients and the debut EP from Adelaide’s Olly Holmes plus another track from Volume 2 of Anti-Fade Records’ “New Centre of the Universe” compilation series. Then, from elsewhere in the world, there were songs from the brilliant new records by Cate Le Bon, the Wicked Whispers and Surf City, plus of course, another track from our favourite album of the moment – “The High Frontier” by California’s Lumerians – and lots more! But as we said earlier, there is never enough time to play everything, though of course there is always next week.....
