Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

We began with a long track from a current band, Eternal Tapestry, and finished with another extended piece, this time by 60’s icon Ravi Shankar, illustrating yet another small indication of the ongoing influence of psychedelia, beginning thousands of years ago, as outlined in many books and studies, including “Psychedelia : An Ancient Culture, A Modern Way of Life” by the late Patrick Lundborg, eminent Swedish writer and philosopher. But hey, we’re here for the music and there were plenty of new releases for us to play for you. These included the title track from the debut Wicked Whispers album, Syd Arthur covering Led Zeppelin and new 7” singles by Quitty and the Don’ts and Adelaide’s own the Dunes. Then there were some older tracks including one from the 1967 debut of the Glass Family through to Japan’s Ghost and onto Germany’s Vibravoid and Hawaii’s Barbarellatones. Then there was our choice of “Compilation of the Week” where we went back to last year’s seven 7” vinyl singles boxset from the brilliant Fruits de Mer Records, called “7 and 7 Is”, which compiled a group of current bands covering a diverse bunch of 60’s bands such as the Byrds, Love, the United States of America and Moby Grape, amongst others, all packaged with period-faithful artwork and using a mixture of red, white and blue vinyl for the actual singles – great concept!
We’ll be back next week but before we go, just a reminder to our UK listeners/readers that “Games for May”, presented by MegaDodo and Fruit de Mer Records is being held this Sunday 24th May at 'the Half Moon' pub in Putney [details here] with a bunch of cool bands that we feature regularly on this show, so try and get along. It’s a tad too far away from Australia for us to go but you?? Until next time.....

Technicolour Dreaming

This edition’s “Compilation of the Week” is an ongoing series put out by the UK’s Particle Records called “UPSIDE DOWN – Coloured Dreams From The Underworld : 1966-1971”, the latest of which, Volume 3, was released only a couple of months ago. It is a cornucopia of mostly obscure late-60’s Australasian psych pop, with a few “hits” and lesser-known songs by well-known artists thrown in. It’s a fascinating glimpse of the New Zealand and Australian “pop scene” of the era, with extensive liner notes accompanying each volume, and though we had some difficulty finding film clips from the period to go with the songs we chose, hopefully we’ve managed to give you an idea of those sounds. Furthermore, we featured other Sixties’ songs from around the world during the course of the show, as well as recent releases from the likes of Melbourne’s Wesley Fuller, Scotland’s Dr Cosmo’s Tape Lab and Iceland’s Singapore Sling, plus Sendelica’s brilliant version of Pink Floyd’s “The Nile Song”, taken from Fruit de Mer Records recent Barrett/Floyd tribute double-CD compilation “A Momentary Lapse of Vinyl”. We finished with 1969’s uber-psychedelic “Cold Spider” by C. A. Quintet from their brilliant “Trip Thru Hell” album before saying adieu until next week.....

Technicolour Dreaming

Another of the Nuggets series of boxsets was our choice for this edition’s “Compilation of the Week”... This time it was “Where the Action Is!  Los Angeles Nuggets 1965-1968” which was released in 2009, in a hard-cover book format with the 4-CDs slotted into the back cover – lots of very cool photos and articles with detailed liner notes about each song and artist... and what great songs they are! This is probably our favourite of the Nuggets boxset collection [the 1972 original double-LP stands separately of course!] because LA was producing a plethora of wonderful bands in this period, many well-known, but most not, which in no way diminishes the quality of the sounds coming out of the area however – brilliant stuff! Basically, if you can only have one boxset, this is the one! Another producer of fine music is the UK’s Fruits de Mer label whose latest compilation “Strange Fruit & Veg” is packed with goodies. From it this week we chose a great version of the Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows”, complete with filmclip. We also featured an Australian 60’s section with tracks by Ray Brown and Hugo amongst others, plus recent music from acts such as Lumerians, the Myrrors and Elephant Stone. So now, we bid you “adieu” until next week, when we’ll have more psychedelia and associated obscurities for your listening and viewing pleasure....
.....until then, here is the playlist and some visuals to amuse you, including the Kikagaku Moyo “official clip” for ‘Kodama’..... enjoy!
