Technicolour Dreaming

Well, this has got to be (nearly) a first for Technicolour Dreaming - a video clip for every single song … well, there were two bands that I couldn’t find a clip for, but that’s pretty good! 

This week there were two brand, spanking new releases to play tracks from - Sydney’s The Dandelion, with the their wonderfully named “Seeds, Flowers and the Magical Powers of the Dandelion”, which sounds as good as the title is long; and a great new Mega Dodo release from Lisbon band Beautify Junkyards, whose CD “The Beast Shouted Love” was recorded outside for the large part, and this is definitely reflected in the mood that they have managed to create - great summer listening! And this show is dedicated to Peter Brat, who would have been celebrating his birthday today - so enjoy!

Technicolour Dreaming

And after an absence of nearly 3 months, The Cat finally returns to the airwaves, though without husband and partner-in-music, Peter Brat, who tragically passed away in July. All those who knew The Brat, whether personally, or by association with Three D Radio’s “Technicolour Dreaming”, “Obscured by …”, or his musical career, will surely agree that his death is great loss to music of all kinds, and especially his particular love, anything that could remotely be construed as psychedelic. 

Hats off to Harry and Michael Hunter, who have been keeping the Technicolour Dreaming driver’s seat warm this past couple of months & doing a fine job- the show must go on!

Needless to say, the “comeback show” featured many Cat and Brat faves from round the world, including The Fast Camels, Jim Noir, Nick Nicely, Thee Oh Sees, Vibravoid and Dolly Rocker Movement from the past decade, Roxy Music and Brian Eno from the 70’s, and many more. Particularly exciting is the news that Moon Duo will finally be playing in Adelaide in November, after their disappointing cancellation as the support for John Spencer Blues Explosion a while back. Hopefully an interview with Riley and Sanae is in the works when they get here - fingers crossed !

Peter Brat

We’re deeply saddened by the passing of Peter Staben, aka Peter Brat, influential and much loved presenter of Technicolour Dreaming and Obscured By… and member of The Brats and Rashamra. Peter passed away Thursday, July 16 2015 surrounded by his family. Rest in peace our friend, you will be sorely missed.

Technicolour Dreaming

the Cat& the Brat were unable to do this week’s edition of Technicolour Dreaming, but fellow 3D Radio announcer Bryan, of Tuesday morning’s great “Mellowscream” show, dropped into the control console and saved the day! Technicolour Dreaming

Former Obscured by... and now occasional Technicolour Dreaming co-host, Michael Hunter, joined Peter Brat in the studio this week [while the Cat was away...] and brought in some obscure treats for our aural enjoyment, including a compilation of 70’s European glam and another of 60’s garage punk from Sacramento which included a 1966 version of ‘She’s a Mod’, which in Australia & New Zealand was a big hit for Ray Columbus in 1965. The name of the band doing this version? The Mods, of course! He also dredged up an instructional promo for the ARP synthesiser company, narrated by Roger Powell, who went on to play with Todd Rundgren’s Utopia amongst others. Then of course there were some newer goodies to play, including recently released mp3 tracks from the See See and the Barbarellatones plus a cool new song from the legendary Petula Clark, now in her 80^th year – great stuff! As well there was a song from Dutch band DeWolff who are touring Australia in March and one from the latest album by Irish psych-poppers, Pugwash. Throw in a few Australian tracks from the 70’s, some Paul & Linda McCartney [enjoy the doco about RAM from 1971 we’ve included] and a surfeit of other good sounds, finishing with Eternal Tapestry, whose new album should be in our hands by next week... and then it was over! Sadly, this was the last edition to be broadcast from our long-time studios in the iconic "brownstone house in Stepney". From next week onwards, we will be bringing you our show from the new 3D Radio studios in leafy suburban St Peters.... so stay tuned!

Obscured By...

Two ‘DOTS’, Michael Hunter & Peter Brat, were your guides this week into the murky world of forgotten, rarely heard and simply strange music that we like to play here on 3D Radio in Adelaide, Australia. As always, we began with a set of Australian rarities, this time from the 70’s, including comedian Norman Gunston’s take on punk-rock and the final single from Adelaide’s Vibrants, before throwing in a song which fitted our criteria because it has only just been released and this was possibly the first time it had received airplay – we refer, of course, to the Glenn Cardier track. Some listeners may question how a Beatles b-side could be ‘obscure’, but we played it for the bassline, which we, and an observant listener [Douglas P of Death in June fame], noticed was the same as the Wondermints used in their Abba cover... and it was a b-side! Other rare cover versions were also featured, including one by the accurately named Balsara & His Singing Sitars as well as the recent Scott Walker cover by 3D favourites, Trembling Bells and Bonnie Prince Billy, plus an adaption of a Dylan Thomas poem by Doug Parkinson. Mix in some French language singles, two bands called the Pussycats, one from Norway, the other from Chile, a song by Dengue Fever which was originally a hit in pre-Pol Pot Cambodia, some New Zealand 60’s psychedelia from the likes of the Gremlins and there you have it – another edition of “Obscured by...”!
