Technicolour Dreaming

We began the show this week with two tracks from Eric Burdon & the Animals 1967 album ‘Winds of Change’ and finished it with one from the new album by Australia’s Cloud Control, and so it was for the music we played in-between – the old and the new, here and overseas, soft and loud, fast blasts and slow drones – all the regular ingredients you’ve come to expect in the sounds of Technicolour Dreaming. From the b-side of Temples’ debut single to the Sons of Adam’s Arthur Lee-penned 1966 single a-side via Sula Bassana, Scott Walker, the Millennium and ex-Smallgoods songwriter Ben Mason’s latest psych-pop masterpiece and through to Beaulieu Porch, Mikal Cronin and the new Mynd Gardeners vinyl release, it was a varied journey through psychedelic realms and related states, which included a tribute to long-time Devo drummer Alan Myers who passed away recently, a1966 VOX radio ad, a track from the Gang of Four’s 1980 debut LP, a very electric version of a Serge Gainsbourg classic by Deep Sea Arcade and a strange 1970 b-side by Janie Jones, the London ‘identity’ immortalised by the Clash on their debut LP. So, business as usual here on 3D Radio with the Cat & the Brat.....

Technicolour Dreaming

We started off this week with a classic suite from the 1977 debut album by the Stranglers which was certainly a highlight of their live shows in that period, as can be personally attested. From there we ventured far and wide, with an as-yet-unreleased Barbarellatones track kindly sent to us by Robbie, their singer/guitarist, a song from Gary Numan’s “Pleasure Principle“ LP, a dreamy psychedelic take on an early Beatles song by Jacco Gardner, the new mono reissue of a Seeds favourite, a recent Raveonettes EP cut and, near the end, the Damned’s psych/punk tour de force from “The Black Album”. We also featured, amongst others, some tracks from another Psychic Circle label ‘sike-pop’ compilation of 60’s obscurities, one from the brilliant new Hidden Masters debut, the Marty Rhone version of the Michel Polnareff song we featured last week [by Vibravoid] and finally, a classic from Todd Rundgren who is currently touring here in Australia – a must-see show!

Technicolour Dreaming

As time marches on, and the days creep inexorably by, it seems that every fortnight or so we hear of yet another luminary of the music world leaving this mortal coil … this week we paid tribute to the passing of “the Fifth Ramone” artist Arturo Vega and Jefferson Airplane drummer Joey Covington by playing the former band’s cover of the latter’s “Somebody to Love”. On a brighter note Vic Conrad, veteran of the Adelaide music scene and also known as “Mr V” to his record-shopping friends, dropped in to do a spot of guest programming, bringing with him a copy of the brand-spanking new CD and single by the Dust Collection, of which he is a member, as well as LPs by Portugal’s Saturnia, the UK’s Instant Flight and America’s Sky Picnic amongst other delights. We also played another track from Vibravoid’s new album, this time a 60’s French cover which is better known to Australians in its translated form as “No No No No No” by Marty Rhone plus a version of a song from Gilbert & Sullivan’s operetta “Iolanthe” by the inimitable Todd Rundgren, who is currently touring Australia......

Technicolour Dreaming

Ant and Dan from Adelaide’s conquering psych heroes, Ride Into The Sun, were welcomed back from their recent US tour, which centred on their well-received appearance at the 2013 Austin Psych Fest, as interviewees & guest programmers on this week’s show. We also previewed tracks from their new, self-titled mini-LP [available in a very limited edition on psychedelic, multi-coloured vinyl, as well as on CD] which will be launched here on Saturday 6^th July, when they play alongside the Morning After Girls and Archers at ‘Jive’ in Hindley Street... certainly a contender for ‘gig of the year’! The guys had lots of stories to share from their sojourn in the US and played tracks by some of the bands they encountered, including the Black Ryder, Singapore Sling and, of course, festival hosts the Black Angels. Also thrown into the mix of sounds were Spain’s Los Chicos, German psychedelicists Sula Bassana and the debut of Adelaide’s the Byzantines plus the latest single by Pond, a classic b-side from the Stems and a track from the new Mikal Cronin LP, finishing with a French 60’s single by Les Yper Sound which was later used in the theme for TV’s ‘Futurama’.....
