Obscured By...

The new - a local Adelaide band Tea whose demo was only received a matter of days previously.  The unreleased - a totally improvised song by Broderick Smith & Matt Walker recorded at Semaphore late 2011.  The odd - Yat-Kha's throat singing Love Will Tear Us Apart, and other wild world music versions of well known songs.  The unexpected - a reggae version of My Sweet Lord.  The pretty wonderful - music by US early 70s psych band Mystic Siva and South Korea's "godfather of rock' Shin Joong Hyun.  The Australian rarities - present and correct.  The host - Michael Hunter.  The common thread - Obscured By..., of course!

Technicolour Dreaming

The psych-pop classic “We Love You” by the Rolling Stones, with Brian Jones on mellotron and Lennon & McCartney on backing vocals, began today’s edition of Technicolour Dreaming, while, with ‘The Seeker’ from their debut EP, the Sunnyboys, in their last appearance as our “band of the month”, finished it. In between, we played a cut from the soon-to-be-released debut album by the Laurels, recent releases from bands such as Thee American Revolution, Love Parade and Them Plasms, a song from a Brian Eno’s ‘Another Green World’, a track from Paul McCartney’s debut solo album featuring his first recorded duet with Linda, a version of “The Saint” theme by a UK band found on a compilation of instrumentals supposedly from behind ‘the Iron Curtain’ [?], a Ray Davies song given the Redd Kross treatment, the brilliantly-named ‘Krome Plated Yabby’ 1967 single from Australia’s own Wild Cherries and the Count Five’s ‘Psychotic Reaction’, plus much more... all brought to you once more by the Cat & the Brat on 3D Radio 93.7fm.....

Obscured By...

It probably says something about an Obscured By... audience that the best reaction we got this show was to a 42 year old flexi disc promoting a Readers Digest LP box set!   But then it probably says even more that we actually played it, along with another flexi designed for service station owners to promote a new, exciting kind of fuel.  That one is so obscure, we have no idea who is on it or when it came out.  But then, we also uncovered an early 60s track by The Big Three, with pre-Mamas & Papas Cass Elliott, which was not only a heavy influence on a current Neil Young version of the same song, but a rather well known and apparently unrelated hit in the meantime.  Very rare Australian tracks (Snakes Alive) were also included as usual, along with the other delights listed below.  All three "dots", at your service...

Technicolour Dreaming

A mixed bag of tunes was on our menu again this week, starting with Traffic’s second single... still a great song despite bringing to mind ‘Neil the hippy’ every time we hear it! We featured cuts from an assortment of new releases, including two of our current faves, Ty Segall & White Fence’s ‘Hair’ LP and ‘Bloom’ by Beach House, plus tracks taken off slightly older albums by the likes of Espers, Asteroid #4 and the Frowning Clouds, as well as a brilliant Beatles’ cover by Pete Shelley and a classic from the Psychedelic Furs debut LP, before finishing with our June “Band of the Month”, the mighty Sunnyboys... these and a whole bunch more were played for your listening delight by  the Cat & the Brat.....
