Sitars, theremin and mellotron, backwards guitar, phasing and fuzz, fringes and mohawks, paisley, black, velvet and leather, feedback, bass and drone, beads, berets and safety-pins, Shindig! and Creem, 3 chord wonders, teenage symphonies and snarl, Rickenbacker, Farfisa and 4-track recorders... onstage at CBGB's, Max's Kansas City or the Trip, the Roundhouse, the 100 Club or the Crystal Ballroom, Catcher's, Big Daddy's or the Squatters Arms.... and the Cat and the Brat on 3D Radio!
Three D Radio announcer, MeganCat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat)lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula. Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs onThree D Radio 93.7fm, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station. Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming", watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage, surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...
Aah, this was the day when everything went wrong... a few minutes into the show and the computer had a hissy-fit, leading to several people pulling plugs in and out, and scrambling around under the desk, trying to find the on/off switch. Needless to say, by the time everything was up and running again, my programming was totally out the window, but at least the music went to air! These are the perils of Community Radio, but on the upside, when everything is operating as it should, we're very lucky to be able to play whatever we fancy (and without endless commercials interrupting the flow), which benefits you, the listener. As a result of the above-mentioned malfunctions, I ended up unintentionally relying on 2 very good compilations (as you'll see below, they feature very strongly in the playlist): Fruits de Mer Records'"Strange Fruit and Veg"compilation, and "Wild About You: A Tribute to the Australian Rock Underground 1963 - 1968". Both releases are collections of cover versions, and very good versions they are too! So here's the playlist, but with limited clips this week...

Covers and Comps (cover versions and compilations, that is...) pretty much sums up this week's show, with both in abundance! And especially those of the Australian variety, such as "Tomorrow Is Today: A Tribute to the Australian Psychedelic Scene 1966-70" and "Burn Your Fingers On The Sun", two classic double-CD psych comps which are now pretty hard to lay your hands on, unless you get lucky in the second-hand bins. The former release also features a disc of current (at the time) bands covering sixties Australian songs ... details of which can also be found in the accompanying book (of the same title) by Iain McIntyre, which also covers fashion, youth culture and society at large, and is still available from Wakefield Press. Unfortunately not many clips of these bands exist, so in some cases I've included an alternative song to give you an idea, in case you missed the show.

At Three D Radiowe are lucky enough to receive donations of CDs and vinyl to fill gaps in our collection, often from other announcers (I'm sure regular listeners will have heard me, and others, mentioning the latest release donated by Andrew K, whose show follows Technicolour Dreaming), and sometimes from generous members of the public. So I was very pleased to discover the compilation "Monster a Go-Go: Teen Trash from Psychedelic Tokyo '66-'69"had appeared as a new acquisition, and that it had not one, but two tracks by The Spiders! Some years ago, I had seen a some excerpts from the 1968 movie "Go Forward!" and a few other comedies that featured The Spiders (apparently there are thirteen in total!), but had no idea of the names of the songs. I've now discovered that one of my favourites was "Nati Bati Yi", which is included on the compilation (obscure fact - backing vocalist and tambourine player Masaaki Sakai might be better known as the lead character in the TV series "Monkey"). So here's the playlist for the show, with clip of "Go Forward!" at the end, for your amusement...
