Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

We had our inaugural interview in the new 3D studios this week... and the esteemed interviewee was singer/guitarist Matt from Adelaide band Brillig. He brought us in a ‘hot off the presses’ copy of their soon-to-be-released new albumI Ain’t Ever Gonna See The Sea’ to give our listeners a sneak preview and to promote their upcoming shows at the Adelaide Fringe Festival. We also featured some of the new music that has appeared in our postbox recently, such as the swirling psych pop of the debut album by England’s Beaulieu Porch and the title track of the third album by Swedish band, the Amazing, before focusing on a selection of Australian and local 1960’s garage and psych. We played a track from the new early Bee Gees retrospective as well as bands such as the Purple Hearts, the Hergs and Procession and included a tribute to the late Kevin Peek by playing his classicThen I Heard the Fire Sing’ by his band, the James Taylor Move. We came back to the 21st century to finish with a couple of recent live recordings by Adelaide favourites Dieselwitch and Slingshot Dragster and a very cool Rolling Stones cover by the Gaye Blades on a Norton Records 7”single from 2007.....

Obscured By...

At last, all 3 ‘DOTS’, Michael and Megan and Peter, were together again to present this week’s edition of “Obscured by...”! Needless to say, with the imput of all three hosts it was an even more eclectic show than ever, ranging from Abba songs done Ramones-style, a bit of Tiny Tim, the 60’s sunshine psych of the David and a sitar-drenched instrumental by famed session drummer Hal Blaine, the original composer’s demo of a Cindy Lauper hit, the first 7” by ‘lost’ UK post-punkers Scars through to the post-LSD ramblings of self-appointed guru Kit Ream and the musings of Mr Spock. There were a cool bunch of bands featuring this week’s letter I and our usual opening set of 60’s Australian recordings... all very, dare we say it, obscure!

Obscured By...

Peter Brat and Michael Hunter were briefly joined by third ‘DOT’, Megan Cat, via a phone link for one of the airbreaks, so technically there were three presenters on today’s show... and we were glad of her imput when she gave us a brief rundown on early 80’s Adelaide band the Metronomes, pointing out that local legend, Ash Wednesday, had played on the single we had picked from the 3D library as part of our ‘M’ bracket, today’s ‘Letter of the Week’. Apart from all that, we played the usual variety of obscurities and rarities from Australia and around the world, featuring a bunch of singles from 60’s Holland by bands such as the Phantoms, one from an album by Guatemalan band Electronicos La Fuente released in 1969, and a 1981 demo from Bauhaus. We also played music from the “Paisley Underground” scene of early 80’s L.A. which revolved around bands such as the Salvation Army (later renamed the 3 O’Clock) and the Bangs (who of course evolved into the Bangles), and we added one of Australia’s equivalents, the Church. Throw in some Manson Family and Graham Bond for Halloween, plus some Taman Shud and lots more, and you have another “Obscured by...

Obscured By...

Wow! A conjunction of our stars meant that all 3 ‘DOTS’... Michael, Peter and Megan... were in the studio this week, Obscuring together, once again! (please forgive the hype but it’s not a very common occurrence these days!) And accordingly, what a diverse show it was... from rare 60’s Australian pop and garage, to MerseyBeat from Iceland (that river sure flows a long way!), Canada and Spain, through to a sublime track by new European band, Birch Book. Along the way there was a swirly sitar blast from Truth, who emerged from the ashes of Irish faves, Them, a bit of classic Todd Rundgren, a nod to UB40 (whose iconic ‘dole’ cover has become apropos  with their recent bankruptcy case!), and some psychedelic, non-bubblegum Lemon Pipers. Also, we each snaffled blindly some ‘gems’ (or not!) from the ‘N’ sections of the various vinyl/CD areas of the extensive 3D Radio Library (over 70,000 items!) for our ‘Letter of the Week’ segment... hmmm, mixed results as usual, but definitely ‘obscure’ and/or rare! Ahhh, we had fun.....

Obscured By...

There were two ‘DOTS’ back in the studio this week, Michael Hunter and Peter Brat... and again, a big ‘thank you’ to last week’s ‘honorary DOT’, Tim K., who ably filled in for us with yet another take on the obscurities we love! And this week, it was with a gallic tinge... with a group of  francophone recordings of the 60’s from France and Canada. There was the usual spread of Australian and local rarities, a couple of American garage ragers and a track by the Aztecs, who were NOT of the Billy Thorpe of Australia variety, as the liner notes to the compilation we found it in suggested, but rather, were a band from Toronto in Canada, who recorded the single in the UK under the auspices of  British  popstars,  Peter & Gordon’, during their stay in London in 1964-65... this new information came to us via a review of “what’s happening in Toronto”  in a 1965 issue of BillBoard magazine... another mystery solved by your intrepid DOTS! We picked a few random songs from the vast 3D library by bands whose name started with a “U” as part of our on-going ‘blind pick by alphabet’ segment... and of course, we finished with some surf music and an interesting radio-only version of ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ by Australian legends, the Strangers, from 1967... all very rare, obscure and often strange!....
