Technicolour Dreaming

The so-called “race that stops a nation” passed with barely a ripple here at 3D Radio, though we did begin with Welsh popsters Race Horses as an ironic wink, thus leaving the rest of the show to our regular perusal of new sounds, topped up with older favourites and obscurities. In the latter grouping, we saluted the late Paul Revere, who continued performing with a version of the Raiders until last year – definitely a lifetime dedicated to music – by playing, from 1965, one of their many great songs, “Just Like Me”. Amongst the newer contingent were tracks by Moth Effect, Melbourne’s Basement Spaceman, the latest release by Beaulieu Porch and the upcoming single by Sweden’s Haleiwa. Finally, for two weeks in a row, our “Artiste of the Week” was provided by Switzerland... last week it was Borderline Symphony, this time it is the prolific musician known as Balduin. He has just released “All In A Dream”, a new limited edition ‘vinyl-only’ LP on the UK’s Sunstone Records, following his sold-out “The Glamour Forest” EP from earlier in the year. Both have been garnished with well-deserved rave reviews in magazines such as “Shindig!” and various on-line psych blogs and this new LP has flown into Technicolour Dreaming’s “Top 5 releases of 2014” list! Technicolour Dreaming

There is so much great new music at the moment for us to play on Technicolour Dreaming we are occasionally guilty of failing to feature the equally wonderful sounds of past decades from around the world as much as we perhaps should. Not this week however... almost half the songs are from both days past and diverse locales, including, amongst the 60’s contingent, the USA‘s Lyme & Cybelle [featuring a young Warren Zevon] and Hour Glass [from whence the Allman brothers appeared], Sweden’s Mecki Mark Men, an unjustly obscure, fantastic track from Frenchman Bernard Chabert and the Atlantics’ classic “Come On” featuring vocals by Australian legend, the late Johnny Rebb. Not that the aforementioned “great new music” was ignored though, with a spangly new EP from Adelaide veterans the Mynd Gardeners and a wonderful new single from Chicago’s the Luck of Eden Hall, both of which can be found on bandcamp and other digital outlets, which brings us to this show’s “Band of the Week” – the White Kites hail from Warsaw in Poland [though singer Sean Palmer is English, the rest of the band are Polish] and their debut full-length LP “Missing”, which was released in late 2013, is a brilliant modern take on late 60’s/early 70’s UK pop psych, with elements of folk, music-hall whimsy and space-rock woven into an album of clever, hook-laden pop songs which could easily have come from that era, but, produced with current production values, it makes them simultaneously modern, and that’s no mean feat, plus mention must be made of the fantastic cover art which presents an accurate guide to the splendours within! They certainly deserve their “band of the week” accolade, so check them out – you won’t be disappointed! So, until next week....

Technicolour Dreaming

It was the day of “the race that stops Australia”, the Melbourne Cup, but here on 3D Radio, the only Race Horses to be heard were the Welsh band who started the show! Instead, our feature this week was the UK vinyl-only record label Fruits de Mer, which has been one of the foremost exponents of the recent revival of vinyl singles and albums in popular culture, with a brilliant range of beautifully packaged, limited edition, variously coloured vinyl slabs of psychedelia, Krautrock, r&b, progressive and spacerock goodness. From their catalogue, we played tracks of various genres and locales including the Netherlands’ Jack Ellister and Spain’s Stay as well as a new mix of Vibravoid’s swirling cover of Tyrnaround’s ‘Colour Your Mind’, the album version of which we played earlier this year – great stuff! Speaking of cover versions, we featured a few this week, including a great version of a Marmalade pop-psych classic by James McKeown, Crystal Jacqueline’s lovely take on a Second Hand song and Ty Segall’s new vehicle Fuzz doing King Crimson’s “21^st Century Schizoid Man” on the b-side of their new single. Of course we also played  some more tracks from the “Wizzz! psychorama francais - Vol.1” compilation LP, a new track from Dark Ocean Colors, a suite from Chad & Jeremy’s 1968 psych pop LP masterpiece “The Ark”, a new demo from the Barbarellatones in which they channel Andy’n’Edie..... and lots more.....

Technicolour Dreaming

With another bunch of CDs and vinyl appearing in our post-box, we were again spoiled with choice this week, playing amongst others, a track each from the new Carlton Melton and Magic Cat albums, a song from ex-Dolly Rocker Movement frontman Daniel Poulter’s new project, the Dandelion, as well as the A-side of Jacco Gardner’s latest single. We also finally received the long-awaited “Wizzz! Volume 1” compilation LP of French 60’s psychedelia which inspired a set of French grooviness from artists such as Les Papyvores, Jacques Dutronc and the inimitable Brigitte Bardot. However, a large hunk of the show was dedicated to the late Lou Reed – we featured songs from his Velvet Underground and solo periods plus a track from his widow, Laurie Anderson, and have included in the ‘moving pictures’ section of this blog, an hilarious TV interview in Sydney at the start of his 1974 tour here – I was fortunate enough to see him in Adelaide where he mixed with some of us in the bar during his support act, AC/DC – a memorable show!
