Three D Radio announcer, MeganCat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat)lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula. Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs onThree D Radio 93.7fm, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station. Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming", watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage, surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...
Little ol' Adelaide has quite a musical heritage, which is probably why it was formally recognised by UNESCOin 2015 as a designated "City of Music", and one of only 116 cities around the globe recognised for their musical culture (OK, 116 is actually quite a few...!) So ahead of next week's Radiothon, I played a broad selection of Adelaide bands ranging from the 1960's to 2003, with some more recent examples expected to surface on the show on the 23rd (ie tomorrow). The eagle-eyed amongst you will probably notice that some of the Adelaide video clips don't match the actual song played (as the clips don't exist - yet), but I've included them as an example of the type of music (for strictly historical reasons - of course). And stop the presses, next week will be an extra special, one-off,"Obscured by ... Ahh, technology... don’t you
love it? For this week’s show we’d lined up a ‘live-to-air’ phone interview
with Rick Brewer, drummer with Australian
pop legends the Zoot, and were looking
forward to discussing his experiences with that band, their new CD/DVD of their
2011 reunion tour, his perspective on Australian music in the 60’s and 70’s and other
highlights of his long musical career – he was on the line chatting and we went
to air and...... nothing! A “technical difficulty” had intervened so the
interview didn’t happen – ahh, the wonders of the age! Grrr!! Fortunately, the ability
to spin discs was unaffected so we were able to play a selection of the music
he was involved with, including 1960’s Adelaide group the
Third Party and of course the Zoot. The
rest of the show went without a hitch however, and we featured the
latest recordings by Technicolour Dreaming
favourites such as the Barbarellatones, Lumerians and Permanent
Clear Light as well as new tracks by Adelaide bands, Glass Skies and Last
Days of Kali. We also couldn’t refrain from throwing in a musical
commentary on the recent Australian elections with our first few songs – the X-Ray-Z song, in particular, still remains a relevant
reflection on the LiberalParty’s election, both in 1978 and 2013! And with
summer approaching we thought it appropriate to play some Surf School Dropouts and Sunnyboys,
plus a forgotten Move b-side, a perennial Mike Furber fave and much more.....

Beginning with local outfit Ride Into The Sun, we voyaged back to some early Dandy Warhols and even earlier Simple Minds, as well as a Beach Boys song allegedly adapted from a Charlie Manson demo, before returning to the present with Thee American Revolution, Melbourne’s Magic Bones, the Sunburners and the brand new vinyl EP from the Mynd Gardeners. Along the way we played a classic from Scratch Acid, a side of the sole single by Adelaide’s Die Dancing Bears, a great 13th Floor Elevators cover by the Dagoes, plus, from the 60's, the original version of ‘Faster Pussycat, Kill!Kill!’ by the Bostweeds..... these, and many more, were played for your delectation before we signed off with our current ‘Band of the Month’, the Zoot.....
