Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

Little ol' Adelaide has quite a musical heritage, which is probably why it was formally recognised by UNESCO in 2015 as a designated "City of Music", and one of only 116 cities around the globe recognised for their musical culture (OK, 116 is actually quite a few...!) So ahead of next week's Radiothon, I played a broad selection of Adelaide bands ranging from the 1960's to 2003, with some more recent examples expected to surface on the show on the 23rd (ie tomorrow). The eagle-eyed amongst you will probably notice that some of the Adelaide video clips don't match the actual song played (as the clips don't exist - yet), but I've included them as an example of the type of music (for strictly historical reasons - of course). And stop the presses, next week will be an extra special, one-off, "Obscured by ... Technicolour" with the inimitable Mr Michael Hunter returning as co-host - expect some, shall we say, unusual music on the Radiothon show. Playlist and video clips? See below...

Technicolour Dreaming

There was a definite German flavour to the show this week, with Vibravoid, Klaus Nomi, and Can featuring (lots and lots of Can, certainly more of an airing than ever before, and very likely, ever again!) The latter two bands were choices of fill-in co-host Mike G, who certainly put a different spin on the second half of Technicolour Dreaming! A smattering of local Adelaide bands also featured, with The Dunes, Wild Rocket, Blood Plastic and an old but good one from Nuvo Bloc thrown in for good measure. The rest of the show was the usual mix of old and new from round the world … and following the Australian Playboys’ “Sad” with The Social Outcasts’ “Mad” was totally unintentional!

So here’s the playlist, with clips galore…..

Trappist Afterland - Penitents Rail     (“Like a Beehive, The Hill Was Alive” 2014 Melbourne, Australia)

Obscured By...

It was a largely Australian show today, beginning with our regular selection of 60’s and early 70’s sounds by artists as diverse as Barrington Davis, Love Machine and Adelaide’s the Hergs, and including the weird single from an equally weird yet iconic Aussie movie, Stork. Then it was time for some examples of the particularly Antipodean take on post-punk which flourished here after 1977, featuring, amongst others, the Fabulous Marquises, Tactics, the Moodists and Ugly, Ugly, Ugly. Then it was overseas to Germany, the USA and even Japan, where we heard a long piece from Terahara Taka’aki, better known as J.A.Caesar, taken from the wonderful ‘Electric Psychedelic Sitar Headswirlers’ series... and not forgetting the UK, which provided a couple of songs from the very cool reissue of the first 3 albums by the Bee Gees, which was our featured boxset. We finished with our “Letter of the Week” segment, diving blindly into the C sections of the 3D library and finding... Colostomy Bag Lady, for instance! Great stuff! All these rarities and forgotten gems presented for you this week by the Cat and the Brat.....

Obscured By...

Peter Brat was the lone ‘DOT’ this week on “Obscured by...” and focused primarily on 1960’s music, though a few more recent tracks (...well, 80’s anyway!) were also played, including the version of ‘Greggary Peckory’ by Siouxsie & the Banshees’ drummer Budgie, taken from the British TV series, “Play for Today”, as well as a song from Adelaide post-punk band, Nuvo Bloc. But back to the 60’s... a smattering of local and Australian talent started the show, including a couple of live TV performances; one by Procession, the other featuring Wendy Saddington singing in a rare duo performance with Jeff St John... both sang with the band, Copperwine, but not in the same line-ups. I also played the full 17 minute suite, “In Held Twas In I”, from the second Procol Harum LP, the theme song from the classic “Bedazzled” movie by Peter Cook & Dudley Moore, plus a selection from the new “Circus Days: Pop/Psych Obscurities 1966-70” six cd boxset put out by UK label ‘Past&Present’, including a couple of “mystery tracks” contained therein.... hmmmm!?
