Technicolour Dreaming

Being Record Store Day later in the week, we thought it appropriate to feature a number of vinyl singles and LPs, past and present, so we dug out a few favourites and obscurities including a classic from Big Star’s first album, some Australian 60’s-era singles from the likes of Mike Furber and former Masters Apprentices guitarist, Peter Tilbrook, a French tribute to Dr Wilhelm Reich by the Zorgones and a cut from the brand new LP by Paul Messis, released this week on the UK independent label, State Records. We also featured some of the artists appearing at the upcoming Austin Psych Fest, including organisers the Black Angels and Adelaide representatives Ride Into The Sun, plus some classic pop-psych from the Association and the Seeds as well as tracks from current purveyors such as Vibravoid and Clinic. Regular listeners will be aware of our fondness for  ‘suites’ of songs [most recently one from Procol Harum] so how could we resist playing - in full - the ‘audio-storybook LP’ tale of “Eyes Like The Sky”, narrated and written by Australian legend Broderick Smith [Carson/Dingoes etc] accompanied by the psychedelic/spaghetti western/surf sounds of King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard – brilliant stuff! On a more sombre note, we celebrated the lives of Chris Bailey and Annette Funicello, both of whom passed away recently, by playing some of their music and video-clips – R.I.P. Chris and Annette!

Technicolour Dreaming

Another sizeable delivery of CDs landed in our post office box this week, which made deciding what to play on the show exceptionally easy! We had a mixed bag of old and new music, and threw in a few of our favourites for good measure, with the Walker Brothers, Death in June, the Alohas and Clinic all making a re-appearance. From our recent acquisitions we featured some cool and crazy French tunes from Evariste and Nelly Perrier; throbbing, swirling psych from Vibravoid, Dead Skeletons and the Koolaid Electric Company and 60’s classics from The Fool, Yellow Balloon and the Beau Brummels - you get the idea! Technicolour Dreaming

Perusing the ‘New Releases’  section of the Three D library, we discovered the new Black Angels’ album had arrived – and with only a few weeks until the annual ‘Austin Psych Fest’, of which they are the primary organisers, we naturally felt we should give it an airing, plus play a couple of the other bands of similar ilk such as Permanent Clear Light and Ringo Deathstarr, as well as Adelaide’s own Ride Into The Sun, spinning the b-side of their new single, which is being launched this week in Adelaide. From there it was a mixture of newer music from the likes of Cate le Bon, Decoys and Los Straightjackets and a fair smattering of 60’s magic by bands such as the Strawberry Alarm Clock, July and the Avengers. We also played a cool 1967 single by Mark Radice which caught our attention recently. Though only 10 years old, he wrote, performed and produced it himself – later in life he went on to tour with Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, Johnny Mathis and many others before finding fame as ‘Elmo’ on TV’s ‘Sesame Street’, thus going from child entertainer to children’s entertainer! We then spun some more UK and European psych singles before featuring a classic piece by one of our favourite bands of the 1970’s, the Sensational Alex Harvey Band, to wrap up the show.... all brought to you by the Cat and Brat on Adelaide’s 3D Radio......
