Obscured By... July 12 2011

A solo Michael Hunter this week, but then again not.  For the special in-studio guest was Peter Tilbrook, ex-Masters Apprentices, who dropped a couple of scoops including a potential reformation of a 60s line-up of the band, plus his writing of a musical on the arrival of rock & roll in Australia!  Pre-Masters songs from his earlier bands were also played.  Then there was a fortuitous dip into the "X" section of the Three D record library, some rare UK acetate singles from the 60s, a French version of Friday On My Mind - and a James Last track and a German version of El Paso, just to keep the quality level variable!!  Yep, that sounds like the fun and games of another Obscured By...

Technicolour Dreaming

It was a solo Brat presenting this week’s show... but I was not left totally alone, because I was joined by a couple of members of premier Adelaide psych/fuzz band, Ride Into The Sun, for a chat and a preview of two new tracks, which may appear on their forth-coming new EP. I also played a slew of new releases, including tracks by the Barbarellatones, the Horrors, Thee Oh Sees and the Lord Street Sound, local bands Friends and Hit the Jackpot, plus the new single by Black Cab. Of course there were also some 60’s songs by the likes of the Monkees and the Monks, an instrumental Bowie classic and a rare track by Dave Davies of the Kinks. I finished with our new “Release of the Month” for July... the long-awaited debut E.P. by Australian psych band, the Laurels, entitled ‘Mesozoic’...

Technicolour Dreaming

On this week’s show, we ranged from the debut 7” singles by mid-70’s New Yorkers, Patti Smith and Blondie (the original version of ‘X Offender’ and, in our opinion, superior to the better known album take!), to more recent tracks from San Francisco’s fantastic Thee Oh Sees, Toronto’s brilliant psych band, the Hoa Hoa’s, and Melbourne’s all-girl punk rockers, the Spazzys. We interviewed two members of Adelaide band Van Cleef, Chris and Mike, who also chose an eclectic set for us to play... including a song from the sound-track to Dario Argento’s 1982 movie, ‘Tenebre’, to a Roger Taylor-sung Queen track, to the Stooges. Naturally, we also played a number from the current ‘Album of the Month’ by Belles Will Ring... plus much more...

A veritable around-the-world musical trip, taking in US garage rock classics and rarities - Swiss beat band The Sevens - the more gentle sounds of Owls Of The Swamp and some Dark Britannica - comparing the riff in 'Suspect Device' to that of a Montrose track of some years earlier - demos, rarities, eclectic and hard to categorise music.  Yep, sounds like another Obscured By... this time with a solo Michael Hunter.
