Douglas P. of Death In June fame joined us again as guest programmer this week, on the eve of his North American tour which begins shortly in Mexico [details here], playing some tracks from his recent “Live In Wein” double album. As always he entertained us with anecdotes and stories including the merits of the Dave Clark 5’s contribution to “the British Invasion” and their 1965 movie “Catch Us If You Can”, which we all agreed was an unjustly under-rated 60’s classic! He also brought in music for us to play by artists who have joined him on his various overseas tours, including Ostara, Spitting At Pigeons and Spiritual  Front. Also this week we played a couple of previews from some of the forthcoming album releases by the UK’s wonderful Fruits de Mer Records vinyl-only label – one from Sweden’s Tor-Peders and another by UK stalwarts Astralasia - you can get more details at their website. Add some Byrds, Clinic, Antoine, a mix of new and old psychedelia and more..... and that was the show for another week! We hope Douglas’s shows in the Americas go well and we look forward to catching up again after his return.....

Technicolour Dreaming

This week we had another of those ‘surprise guests’ that join us occasionally... Sam from Subtract-S dropped their hot-off-the-presses EP into the 3D Radio studios during the show, so we naturally asked him to stay for a short chat... Subtract-S comprises ¾ of the now-defunct Almost Numan, whose sole album is a Cat & Brat fave, so we were keen to learn about the new band, inform our listeners about upcoming live shows and hear their debut CD, all of which Sam was happy to do... and much jollity ensued! Of course we also played a myriad of diverse tunes, ranging from the Sand Pebbles through to Earthless [who are coming to town on December 9^th], a rare Luke Haines track and a song from Lothar & the Hand People’s 1968 debut LP. We featured a Bowie cover from both Brillig, our current ‘Band of the Month’ [joined on this occasion by the lovely LeighStarDust], and another from the Barbarellatones before finishing with the Triffids from their 1984 EP...

Obscured By...

Well, it’s RADIOTHON time again, where you (the listeners) can do your bit to keep us on-air and playing all this fine, but largely forgotten or  ignored, music. This week’s ‘DOTS’ were Michael Hunter & Peter Brat and we played our favourite mix of rarities and obscurities, ranging from Adelaide outfits like the Twilights and Smokestack Lightning, to Tiny Tim, the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band and the Dave Clark 5 (whose music is strangely VERY hard to get hold of). We also featured two of Australia’s greatest vocalists, Wendy Saddington (from her new CD reissue with lots of bonus stuff!) and Lynne Randell (from an American-release-only single). We raided the T sections of 3D Radio’s 70,000-plus CD and vinyl library for our ’letter of the week random-pick’ segment, again finding some forgotten gems in the process! And we finished with a song from the brilliant Korean guitarist, Shin Joong Hyun, who made great psych rock music and was persecuted by an authoritarian government in a similar way to America’s treatment of Roky Erikson, but with a better outcome... he’s one of only about half a dozen guitarists to have a ‘signature’ guitar made by Fender!... check him out on the ‘net!

Obscured By...

There were two ‘DOTS’ in the studio to present “Obscured by...” this week – Michael Hunter and Peter Brat. As usual, the music ranged from the sublime to the ridiculous; representing the former, we played the full version of ‘Psychedelic Journey’ by 6o’s New York band, Mystic Tide – and for the latter, a few tracks by some naff German 60’s bands trying to show their hipness by doing bizarre versions of popular songs. Clarinet-led instrumental version of ‘Apeman’ anyone? Hmmmm! The great Rattles song at the end of the set showed how it really should be done! We also featured a Billy Thorpe version of ‘Pride’ (better known in Australia as a hit for Ray Brown) plus the strange ‘folk’ of the Acid Gallery’s ‘Dance around the Maypole’, a rare incursion of the Dave Clark 5 into psychedelic pop, a version of ‘Aquarius’ from the musical ‘Hair’ by Aussie legends the Atlantics, and lots more... including a tribute to the members of young Queensland band Flannelette, who were killed recently in a motoring accident...
