Featuring The Damned as the psychedelic group Naz Nomad & the Nightmares, from an album purporting to be the soundtrack of a non-existant film.  Also starring a rare orchestrated Fraternity B-side, some Moving Parts and a Radioactive Sandwich.  Ably supported by The Searchers, Nico and rare Australian power pop from the abysmally named but somewhat groovy Beaut.  International stars included Singapore Sling, the Golden Earrings, Pussycat and the interestingly named Ladies WC.  All this and more, produced by Michael Hunter, Cat & Brat dot dot dot.

Obscured By...

This week’s edition, hosted by the Cat & the Brat, seemed to come in batches.... beginning with a b-side from Bitch [the band were formerly known as the Cleves and it’s under that name that we have featured them before] we moved into our customary start-up of Australasian 60’s-70’s rarities, including a live TV version of Fraternity’s ‘Seasons of Change’ and the sole single from the Harts. Then we moved up a decade or so with a bunch of mostly unreleased Australian demos from the likes of Adelaide’s legendary Speedboat and Melbourne’s Tlot Tlot [taken from a ‘Fast Forward’ cassette magazine], before going all over the world for some proggy psych goodness, ranging from Switzerland’s Krokodil to Seoul’s Jang Hyun. Then it was New Zealand’s turn – for such a small country they certainly turned out an impressively large quantity of excellent pop-psych in the late 60’s, even continuing into the early 70’s – so it was only fair that we featured some of the more prominent acts such as the Fourmyula, Quincy Conserve and House of Nimrod, before paying tribute to the late Neil Armstrong by playing Dizzy Limits’ “Mare Tranquility” and Oak Apple Day’s classic “Moonshot” singles. A few other obscurities along the way, such as Deep Feeling’s version of “I Put a Spell on You” from 1966 and a psychobilly classic from Sunglasses After Dark, then it was all over – until next time.....

This week , we ranged from the music of 60’s bands such as the Velvet Underground and the Deviants through to recent releases by Dark Ocean Colors, Shearwater and Adelaide favourites Dieselwitch and Nekkro-Electro, with some Ride, Clinic, Nina Hagen and the Ramones and other cool stuff thrown in, plus a moog-flavoured Monkees tribute to the late Davy Jones. Obscured By...

Peter Brat and Michael Hunter were the two ‘DOTS’ in the studio presenting this week’s episode of ‘Obscured by...’, and were joined by phone for a lengthy chat by Craig Collinge, drummer in the Librettos, the Playboys, Procession, Manfred Mann Chapter 111, World War Three, plus lots more, even including a brief stay in Fleetwood Mac in 1973-74, and continuing through to his current ‘Evolution2Revolution’ project.... so we had LOTS to talk about! Of course there was a lot more music played... including a track from Billy Joel’s band Attila (nominated as the ‘worst record ever’ in AllMusic.com, though personally we are sure there are far worse!), a song from the first album by Bjork (aged 14) and a ‘live’ track from reformed local 60’s band, 5 Sided Circle, at their gig last Sunday... can’t get more immediate than that!

A solo Michael Hunter this week.  The main feature of the show was an in-depth interview with Ken Stewart, songwriter for and most longstanding member of the Urban Guerillas, celebrating their 30th anniversary as a band this year!  (See www.urbanguerillas.com for more details).  Of course, just a handful of songs from the band's career were also included.  Plus some rare singles, a short visit to the W section of the Three D library, and a track from the new project "Evolution 2 Revolution" by ex-Procession drummer Craig Collinge.  He now also plays keyboards and has released a new CD, which we expect to chat to him about (along with tales of Procession) in a forthcoming show...
