Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Obscured By...

The main feature this week was a live phone chat (from New Zealand) with Peter Williams, known for his 50-year musical career including such acts as Max Merritt & The Meteors, The Groove and The Mixtures!  Naturally, there was plenty to talk about - including factoids such as the synth intro to Captain Zero being played by Brian Eno - and plenty to play, including Peter's own rare solo single and an unreleased track by Eureka Stockade, the name The Groove took when they moved to the UK.  A fair number of other NZ acts were played throughout the show such as The Underdogs and Shane, along with the usual obscurities and genre-defying bands such as Gangstagrass combining bluegrass with hip hop.  NB: the Peter Williams interview, with Michael Hunter, Cat and Brat but sans music, will be available for download for approx 30 days from http://tinyurl.com/9rtlcvg

Technicolour Dreaming

Beginning with a psychedelic Rolling Stones gem, the Cat & the Brat juggled genres, eras and geography for your listening pleasure. But minutes into the show, we were pleasantly interrupted (twice!) by a knock at the door of Three D Radio, with members of Adelaide bands bearing their brand new releases. Not long after, hot-off-the-press tracks from Brenton Manser and the Readymades were unleashed on the airwaves – ‘seat of the pants radio’ in action!! You too can have your songs aired on Three D – send us a copy, and if we like it, we’ll play it! – regardless, it’ll go into the ‘new releases’ section of the 3D Library for other announcers to discover! But we digress – your hosts proceeded on their merry way with gems from Baker Knight and the Knightmares, Major Tom and the Atoms, the Buzzcocks, and the Great Apes, to name but a few. A highlight was the Jigsaw Seen’s version of ‘Circle of Steel’, featuring Dave Davies on backing vox, so naturally we had to follow this with a rare Davies track from his new “Hidden Treasures” anthology.  And being the first day of August, it was time to finish the show with a new “Artiste of the Month”, with Adelaide’s late, great Baterz winning the spot for the next 4 weeks.....

Obscured By...

Another sad farewell this week, this time to Australian rock stalwart Darryl Cotton who passed away a few days previously.  A number of related rarities from a few of his musical endeavours were therefore found and played to start the show.  Another lesser known death was that of Geoff Ratz, bass player with 60s Melbourne band The Pink Finks, best known for introducing Ross Wilson & Ross Hannaford (Daddy Cool) to the world.   Other material included some "new" Joey Ramone, 60s European pop with The Golden Earrings and Jacques Dutronc, 80s Irish post punk and all the other styles and locales listed below.  Not many performance videos could be found for this week's collection - brought to you by all three "dots" - but they should still be of interest, eg the clip of Zoot's "The Freak" contains stills from their cruise ship reformation performance in 2011.

Technicolour Dreaming

Beginning with a 60’s classic has become a regular feature of the show and this week’s choice was the 1967 debut single by UK band Traffic, which we felt melded quite nicely with the Brian Jonestown Massacre’s eastern-tinged instrumental that followed. In fact we played a fair number of songs from “the original psychedelic era”, as Lenny Kaye named it on the Nuggets LP back in 1972... amongst them was the title-track of Donovan’s 7th album which featured the Jeff Beck Group, the flip-side of the sole UK single by Normie Rowe’s backing-band, the Playboys, on Immediate Records, as well as a track from the “lost” LP by Gary Walker & the Rain – a 1968 ‘Japan-only’ release which just recently became available in the rest of the world. It was also the last appearance of Brian Eno as our ‘Artiste of the Week’ and we concluded the show with the brilliant opening track of his second solo album. Finally, there was also a selection of ‘punk-era’ recordings from the likes of the Ramones, Siouxsie & the Banshees and Patti Smith, which we played in memory of Ian ‘Butch Brat’ Roberts, who passed away last week... Butch was Adelaide band the Bratsmixer, roadie and valued friend, and we saw all these bands, and more, play gigs in London in the mid/late 70’s!
