Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

This week’s show featured a journey around the current world of psychedelia, plus assorted oddities and a side-trip back in time to the first pop psych explosion. So much music to play, and only two hours each week to squeeze it all into! We recently acquired a copy of the brand new addition to Born Bad Records’ wonderful “Wizzz! Psychorama francais 1966 – 71” compilations, Volume 3, making this series a serendipitous choice for our Compilation of the Week, mais oui! Back in the present, we played new tracks from the Wands, Pretty Lightning, Jacco Gardner, the Noble Krell and the Barbarellatones latest demo (love the lyrics!), fitted in some surf from Chile and Denmark, and some 60’s faves such as Gary Walker and the Rain’s much covered classic, “Francis”. And we finished up with Vibravoid’s ode to the Fuzztones organ player Deb O’Nair, which can be found on the just-reissued and re-mastered edition of their classic “2001” LP, complete with extra tracks and quite stunning packaging – it certainly gets our seal of approval! So.....

Technicolour Dreaming

We began with a long track from a current band, Eternal Tapestry, and finished with another extended piece, this time by 60’s icon Ravi Shankar, illustrating yet another small indication of the ongoing influence of psychedelia, beginning thousands of years ago, as outlined in many books and studies, including “Psychedelia : An Ancient Culture, A Modern Way of Life” by the late Patrick Lundborg, eminent Swedish writer and philosopher. But hey, we’re here for the music and there were plenty of new releases for us to play for you. These included the title track from the debut Wicked Whispers album, Syd Arthur covering Led Zeppelin and new 7” singles by Quitty and the Don’ts and Adelaide’s own the Dunes. Then there were some older tracks including one from the 1967 debut of the Glass Family through to Japan’s Ghost and onto Germany’s Vibravoid and Hawaii’s Barbarellatones. Then there was our choice of “Compilation of the Week” where we went back to last year’s seven 7” vinyl singles boxset from the brilliant Fruits de Mer Records, called “7 and 7 Is”, which compiled a group of current bands covering a diverse bunch of 60’s bands such as the Byrds, Love, the United States of America and Moby Grape, amongst others, all packaged with period-faithful artwork and using a mixture of red, white and blue vinyl for the actual singles – great concept!
We’ll be back next week but before we go, just a reminder to our UK listeners/readers that “Games for May”, presented by MegaDodo and Fruit de Mer Records is being held this Sunday 24th May at 'the Half Moon' pub in Putney [details here] with a bunch of cool bands that we feature regularly on this show, so try and get along. It’s a tad too far away from Australia for us to go but you?? Until next time.....

Technicolour Dreaming

It was one of those weeks when our P.O. box was inundated with new releases and a few older goodies so we had lots to choose from to play for you. From amongst this pile of CDs and vinyl we selected new tracks from the UK’s Wicked Whispers, Three Minute Tease [featuring Anton Barbeau], Eternal Tapestry and the brilliant triple-CD from New Orleans’ Chef Menteur, plus songs from the Wands, Surf School Dropouts and Japan’s Sundays & Cybele amongst others. Our featured compilation series this edition was Northern Star Records’ excellent double-CD “Psychedelica” series, beginning with Volume One in 2006 and ending with volume 5 in 2013, and featuring a plethora of both known and obscure modern bands throughout, with many of the tracks unavailable elsewhere. Most of the issues are ‘sold-out’ but can be found on sites such as Discogs and eBay et al. if you search them out. We’ll be playing more of our new ‘incomings’ next week, so until then.....
