Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

From amongst all the new releases recently joining the 3D Library, there were quite a few that we wanted to bring to you, but they wouldn’t all fit in a month of shows, let alone one ... so we selected a few to highlight, amongst them a song from the latest Mynd Gardeners EP, a pre-release track from the new Dandy Warhols album plus another from the new one by Spiritualized. We also played a song from the brand new Molting Vultures record which was produced with Vic Conrad [Garden Path, Dust Collection etc] in conjunction with Matt Hills and the band. From the archives we played a number of Australian singles from the likes of the Hoodoo Gurus, Super K and the Primevils plus some gems from legends such as the Sonics and the Rolling Stones, before finishing with the final showing from our current “Band of the Month”, the Zoot.... so who will it be next month?

Obscured By...

We began this week with a tribute to Vince Lovegrove, who was killed in a road accident last weekend... Vince was a well-respected and much-liked veteran of Australian rock’n’roll, with a long career that incorporated solo work and playing in bands such as the Valentines and, more recently, Mongrels of Passion, plus working as a journalist, television presenter and producer, band manager and AIDS awareness pioneer... and the man who introduced Bon Scott to AC/DC! From there we moved onto a bunch of songs from the extensive Aztec Music re-issue catalogue, with the sad news that the company has gone into receivership, due to large debts owed them by overseas distributers... yet another victim of rapacious multinational capitalism. As virtually the only large re-issue organisation in Australia, our rich musical heritage is once again in danger of being consigned back to the obscurity from which they, and several smaller companies, have bravely attempted to rescue it. **Buy an Aztec Music reissue or 2 today, to help them out! ** Then it was on to another of our “celebration of the compilation” selections... this time a great 2005 single-disc collection from Paris, France called “Gloria: International Garage Rock Club!” from which we played, amongst others, Baby Woodrose and the Dirtbombs. Throw in some wild cover versions by the likes of Pere Ubu and Jim Keays, some Psychedelia, new and old, then finish with a Moog classic and there it is – another “Obscured by...”, brought to you by the 3 DOTS, Michael, Megan & Peter.....

Obscured By...

Obscurity comes in many forms.  It could be songs that were never officially released eg Treo+1 with Issi Dye on lead vocals, or The Manx who had such high hopes (see the video) but never actually released any records.  Or rare Party Machine with Ross Wilson & Mike Rudd, pre- Daddy Cool or Spectrum.  It could be bizarre covers - looking at you, Fibonaccis and Sun Yuma!  It could be stuff that's great but largely forgotten, eg Saddhu Brand, or a famous person's pseudonym (Paul McCartney with Youth, as The Fireman) - or just a seemingly unlikely combination, as in a trippy song by a mid-70s Catholic nun!  Or its very newness makes it unheard, such as the track from the Magic Bones EP not released until next month.  How does one possibly keep up with it all?  Easy - tune into 93.7FM in Adelaide on Tuesdays at 2pm or via www.threedradio.com and let it all come to you!   This week, the show was hosted by all three "dots" for your listening edification.

Obscured by...

Beginning our regular opening set of Australian recordings from the 60’s/70’s with an obscure 7” single by the Limit, which seems to have been released twice by the Australasian arm of RCA Records, firstly in 1968 and then again in 1969, yet sadly failing to bother the ‘hit parade’ on either occasion despite its quality, we moved through some equally fine songs by bands such as the Throb, MPD Ltd and Adelaide’s the Hergs plus a single by the short-lived ‘power trioBulldog, which featured members of Procession, the Purple Hearts and the Bay City Union. While keeping a general psych/garage focus, we then ventured further out in time and place to the 80’s and beyond, with the likes of the Wylde Mammoths from Sweden, Magic Lantern [ a Sun Araw-related project] from the USA, Italy’s Head & the Hares, the Pandoras from California and Something Really Beautiful, whose fine song we discovered on a sampler LP from UK label Creation Records and who apparently released only one single before disappearing ... but at least they left us this great slice of neo-psychedelia. Also featured were tracks from recent reissues of albums by Comus, the Druids of Stonehenge and Paul Revere & the Raiders as well as a track from Hapshash & the Coloured Coat’s sole album, produced by member Guy Stevens, plus another spin of the sitar headswirler by Kali Bahlu by [rare] request. All pretty rare, semi-forgotten yet worthy stuff...just your usual “obscured by...”, presented for your listening pleasure this week by the Cat and the Brat!
