21.3.12 - Palindrome Dreaming in Technicolour!!  Beginning with local outfit Ride Into The Sun, we voyaged back to some early Dandy Warhols and even earlier Simple Minds, as well as a Beach Boys song allegedly adapted from a Charlie Manson demo, before returning to the present with Thee American Revolution, Melbourne’s Magic Bones, the Sunburners and the brand new vinyl EP from the Mynd Gardeners. Along the way we played a classic from Scratch Acid, a side of the sole single by Adelaide’s Die Dancing Bears,  a great 13^th Floor Elevators cover by the Dagoes, plus, from the 60's, the original version of ‘Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill!’ by the Bostweeds..... these, and many more, were played for your delectation before we signed off with our current ‘Band of the Month’, the Zoot.....

Obscured by...

Beginning our regular opening set of Australian recordings from the 60’s/70’s with an obscure 7” single by the Limit, which seems to have been released twice by the Australasian arm of RCA Records, firstly in 1968 and then again in 1969, yet sadly failing to bother the ‘hit parade’ on either occasion despite its quality, we moved through some equally fine songs by bands such as the Throb, MPD Ltd and Adelaide’s the Hergs plus a single by the short-lived ‘power trio’ Bulldog, which featured members of Procession, the Purple Hearts and the Bay City Union. While keeping a general psych/garage focus, we then ventured further out in time and place to the 80’s and beyond, with the likes of the Wylde Mammoths from Sweden, Magic Lantern [ a Sun Araw-related project] from the USA, Italy’s Head & the Hares, the Pandoras from California and Something Really Beautiful, whose fine song we discovered on a sampler LP from UK label Creation Records and who apparently released only one single before disappearing ... but at least they left us this great slice of neo-psychedelia. Also featured were tracks from recent reissues of albums by Comus, the Druids of Stonehenge and Paul Revere & the Raiders as well as a track from Hapshash & the Coloured Coat’s sole album, produced by member Guy Stevens, plus another spin of the sitar headswirler by Kali Bahlu by [rare] request. All pretty rare, semi-forgotten yet worthy stuff...just your usual “obscured by...”, presented for your listening pleasure this week by the Cat and the Brat!

This week , we ranged from the music of 60’s bands such as the Velvet Underground and the Deviants through to recent releases by Dark Ocean Colors, Shearwater and Adelaide favourites Dieselwitch and Nekkro-Electro, with some Ride, Clinic, Nina Hagen and the Ramones and other cool stuff thrown in, plus a moog-flavoured Monkees tribute to the late Davy Jones. It was also the first appearance of Adelaide legends, the Zoot, as our “Band of the Month” for March with their classic version of ‘Eleanor Rigby’.... all brought to you by the Cat and the Brat.

Obscured By...

We opened the show, as always, with a set of Australian rarities from the 60’s and 70’s, but this time including a tribute to Clive Shakespeare, the original guitarist with Sherbet, who passed away recently, before moving onto a selection of American and UK bands from the same era, including the Bush [also known as the Bushmen], the wonderfully named Ognir & the Nite People, Wimple Winch and the Misunderstood, a US band who relocated to London. We then returned to the 21^st Century with a bunch of bands from diverse locations who have taken that 60’s psych/garage/pop template and made it their own, such as the Flower Machine from California, the Jessica Fletchers from Norway and the Selfish Cales from Italy, as well as a set of obscure ‘cover versions’ including black UK punk band Pure Hell doing a Lee Hazlewood song and French model Ronny covering a Sly Stone number... there was an album track by Australia’s Box the Jesuit and in memory of the late Michael Davis, bassist of the MC5, we featured their regular live set-closer, ‘Black to Comm’..... all this and much more, brought to you by the three DOTS – Megan, Peter & Michael...

Technicolour Dreaming

Digging into the 3D Radio “New Releases” section this week, we found some great songs on both new and older bands’ recent offerings and re-issues, including a single by the Sunday Reeds, EPs by Adelaide’s Horror My Friend and Self Preservation Society and a singles and demos anthology from Orange County’s Ty Segall. We played selections from some current psychedelic bands such as Australia’s Black Cab and the Black Ryder, a track off the debut album by Dark Ocean Colors as well as one from the sole album (and sadly neglected masterpiece) by All Night Radio... there was some Bowie and Bolan, classics from the Pixies and the Sunnyboys plus lots more before we finished with our current ‘Band of the Month’, the fabulous Barbarellatones (and check out the award-winning film-clip for the song!)... all brought to you by the Cat and the Brat......
