Technicolour Dreaming

Amongst the songs we played for our first show of 2015 were still more of our picks for “Best of 2014” which we couldn’t fit in or had missed  on the final few shows last year, such as Sacred Shrines, Kikagaku Moyo, Sudden Death of Stars, and Southern Boutique, plus anthologies by Balduin and the Luck of Eden Hall. We also wish to acknowledge a bunch of very cool, small independent record companies who help make it possible for these bands to get their music pressed on vinyl or CD or cassette, as often the bands can’t afford to pay all the costs, as I personally well know [thank you Smashed Records!]. Amongst our favourites are the prolific Fruits de Mer , Beyond Beyond is Beyond, MegaDodo, State Records, Trouble In Mind, Captcha, Sunny Day Records, the Active Listener label, Sonic Cathedral, Off The Hip, Anti-Fade and many more. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to play most of the new music that we do, so thank you all [and to the others that we’ve forgotten, as no doubt we have, our apologies!] Lastly, played our final “Band of the Week”  [we’re making way for a new weekly feature, due to start next week... ] but it was a good one – Polska Radio One from Yekaterinburg in Russia, who’ve been making great psychedelic music for some years now, but with the release of their excellent debut album “Cosmos Inside” on an American label, they have moved to a new level and hopefully will gain worldwide recognition... as I think we’ve mentioned before, this new wave of psychedelia is a global movement and there are new bands everywhere. Technicolour Dreaming

Ahh, technology... don’t you love it? For this week’s show we’d lined up a ‘live-to-air’ phone interview with Rick Brewer, drummer with Australian pop legends the Zoot, and were looking forward to discussing his experiences with that band, their new CD/DVD of their 2011 reunion tour, his perspective on Australian music in the 60’s and 70’s and other highlights of his long musical career – he was on the line chatting and we went to air and...... nothing! A “technical difficulty” had intervened so the interview didn’t happen – ahh, the wonders of the age! Grrr!! Fortunately, the ability to spin discs was unaffected so we were able to play a selection of the music he was involved with, including 1960’s Adelaide group the Third Party and of course the Zoot. The rest of the show went without a hitch however, and we featured the latest recordings by Technicolour Dreaming favourites such as the Barbarellatones, Lumerians and Permanent Clear Light as well as new tracks by Adelaide bands, Glass Skies and Last Days of Kali. We also couldn’t refrain from throwing in a musical commentary on the recent Australian elections with our first few songs – the X-Ray-Z song, in particular, still remains a relevant reflection on the Liberal Party’s election, both in 1978 and 2013! And with summer approaching we thought it appropriate to play some Surf School Dropouts and Sunnyboys, plus a forgotten Move b-side, a perennial Mike Furber fave and much more.....

A mixed bag of tunes was on our menu again this week, starting with Traffic’s second single... still a great song despite bringing to mind ‘Neil the hippy’ every time we hear it! We featured cuts from an assortment of new releases, including two of our current faves, Ty Segall & White Fence’s ‘Hair’ LP and ‘Bloom’ by Beach House, plus tracks taken off slightly older albums by the likes of Espers, Asteroid #4 and the Frowning Clouds, as well as a brilliant Beatles’ cover by Pete Shelley and a classic from the Psychedelic Furs debut LP, before finishing with our June “Band of the Month”, the mighty Sunnyboys... these and a whole bunch more were played for your listening delight by  the Cat & the Brat.....

Technicolour Dreaming

We devoted a chunk of this week’s show to a phone interview with one of our favourite bands... Melbourne’s dulcimer-driven Dandelion Wine, who are in town on June 16 as part of their ‘Light Streaming Down 10th Anniversary Tour’ commemorating the release of their first EP back in 2002. Amongst other things, we spoke to Nicholas about their German record label, Black Rain, the upcoming European tour (their 7^th), favourite toy lobsters and, of course, dulcimers and other exotic string instruments. They are a great live act, so try and catch them next time they are in your locale. Speaking of great live performances, we also played a track from the lovely LeighStarDust who is making her first live appearance in over a year, supporting Dandelion Wine.
