Technicolour Dreaming

Serendipity is a much-touted term, but when it happens, it really makes you realise that everything (in the musical world, anyway) is connected - sorry, I'm getting all mystical here! Quite unintentionally, my serendipitous connection this week is a fellow by the name of Allan Crockford - and he pulls all the strings together by being an original member of The Prisoners, producer of the first album by fellow-Medway scenesters The Dentists, and he's currently writing and performing with The Galileo 7. All bands which I played this week, with The Galileo 7 having just released their new album "Live-O-Graphic", which was recorded in a working lithographic press (in the workshop, not the actual press itself).

I don't normally do reviews, but these "nearly live" tracks are as good as it gets - compared to "really live", that is! A stupendous amount of energy drips from every cut - a touch faster than the originals, but every bit as accomplished. The swirling organ is a highlight, along with the precise vocal harmonies and pounding, volcanic drums and bass powering it all along - if this is "nearly live", then being at an actual performance would obviously be an event that will endure in the memory, for those ever lucky enough to see the band in the flesh (sadly, the Antipodes are a touch far away for me to get to a gig in the UK). This is The Galileo 7 as you've never heard them recorded before - and as fantastic an introduction to their back-catalogue as you could ever hope to own. And so endeth my rave.

Also on the show (phew, I'm out of breath - and words), I featured the first installment of the Mega Dodo Singles Club - 2 limited-edition slices of 7 inch vinyl goodness from The Octopus Syng and The Honey Pot (the former a lovely strawberry-red colour - I do love my coloured vinyl!), complete with a membership card, colour band picture-postcards, download cards, sticker and a tiny bee! And I'm not even going to get started on the "A Seance at Syd's" hardback book and double-CD combo (also from the nice people at Mega Dodo records) - think I might leave that til next week, so I can do it justice - it's just such a lovely thing to behold!

Technicolour Dreaming

It is appropriate that this edition’s Compilation of the Week is the 2014 Electric Sound Show 5-CD box-set, a series that describes itself as ‘An Assortment of Antiquities for the Psychedelic Connoisseur’, which, in part, is what we aim to play for our listeners each week, along with  more recent releases we pick from the current psychedelic outpouring and its 20^th century predeccessors! It has a slightly murky history (you try getting any CONSISTENT, accurate information about this series on the internet!) with the first instalment of the original vinyl series, the “We All Live On Candy Green” LP, put out by Soundshow Records in 2004, followed by “In King Solomon’s Minds” in 2010. The next LP was “Apricot Hash in the Hourglass” in 2011, “Paper Thoughts of Polly Pan” (2013) and finishing with “Green Eyed Gods of Smoke” (also 2013). The set covers rare 60’s psychedelia from Britain and the USA, plus what is variously described as ‘Pop-Psych’, ‘Mindblowing Nuggets’ and ‘Heavy Psychedelic Stoners’ from the rest of the world. The limited edition 5CD box set released by Particles Records that is our particular focus this week is based on the original vinyl albums, but with some different tracks to confuse the issue.... whatever, it is a great boxset, and deserved its place as our feature. Another highlight was a rare interview with Nick of Adelaide’s Molting Vultures... much merriment ensued as he regaled us with tales of the music scene in Melbourne where he now resides. This move several years ago means however that the Molting Vultures now only play occasionally in either city, but have a great turnout of loyal garage-psych aficionados whenever they appear and hopefully a new album release will also ensue in the not too distant future with Nick promising he has some new songs ready for the band to develop. Technicolour Dreaming

We began and ended the show with songs from the late 1960s of diverse style and from various locales, beginning with some fuzzed-out Scott Walker, an equally fuzzed track by Israeli band, Churchill’s and a sitar-drenched album cut by the Hollies, while finishing with a classic slice of “Nederbiet”  by Q65, which followed an updated version of a classic Michel Polnareff song by Germany’s Vibravoid from their 2013 EP on the Fruits de Mer Records label... and so it went for the rest of the show, with a mixture of new releases from the likes of Sydney’s Grease Arrestor  and San Francisco’s Cool Ghouls with older faves such as the Monkees through to Permanent Clear Light and the Sand Pebbles. Then of course there was our “Compilation of the Week”. Following on the heels of the Doors and the Rolling Stones in their “A Psych Tribute To...” series, Cleopatra Records is releasing "Magical Mystery Psych Out: A Tribute to the Beatles" next month and since we managed to grab a pre-release copy, we thought we’d get in early and make it this edition’s featured compilation and give you a sneak preview of some of the delights on offer, with great interpretations and remakes by Quilt, the KVB and Sugar Candy Mountain amongst others, so stay tuned to 3D Radio for further tracks in coming weeks.
