Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

There was a plethora of 1960’s goodness in this edition of Technicolour Dreaming with the centrepiece being our featured Compilation of the Week, "2131 South Michigan Avenue : 60's Garage and Psychedelia from U.S.A. and Destination Records", a double-CD from America  released in 2009 by Sundazed Records, certainly one of the leading, and most interesting, reissue labels around today. This particular compilation features a few bands you may recognise, such as the Cryan’ Shames and Park Avenue Playground, but many you probably don’t but should – for example the excellent Daughters of Eve and the Lost Agency – and that’s the fun of these type of ‘rarities’ compilations, finding great bands you’ve not heard before. Zooming to current releases, we played a tracks from the long-awaited and finally soon-to-be-released new album from Dutch psych hero, Jacco Gardner and the “Crocodilians” LP by the UK’s Moth Effect, plus recent releases from bands such as Psychic Ills, My Expansive Awareness, Vibravoid and France’s Moodoid, amongst a bunch of other delights. Technicolour Dreaming

As usual, it was a veritable smorgasbord of psychedelia, new & old, which we shared with you this week, including long-time faves such as Espers, Black Box Recorder, the Sunchymes, the Loved Ones and the Twilights. An array of new tracks from the Amazing, Semool and Vibravoid rounded out the set, and of course not forgetting the delights contained within our “Compilation of the Week”! Our selection this time round was the Dirty Water series – 2010’s "Dirty Water : The Birth of Punk Attitude" and the following year’s release "Dirty Water 2 : More Birth Of Punk Attitude" a matching pair of 2-disc treats complete with sumptuous booklets. As can be seen from our selections, the tracks on this series, curated by Kris Needs, are all about the “Attitude” of the title that influenced the later Punk movement, particularly in the UK and US, and it can be seen that psychedelia played a significant role in this regard also. Technicolour Dreaming

Our Compilation of the Week for this edition was “A Forest of Goldtops in the Land of Oz” plus its companion volume, “Datura Dreamtime”, a 2-CD series of Australian psychedelia put out in very limited numbers in 1997 and 1999 respectively. They are classed as “unofficial” releases, but most of the songs are long deleted, unknown or very rare, and though a few, by such artists as the Twilights and Bobby & Laurie were on major labels, most, for instance by Glass Web [whose bass-player, incidentally, later found some reknown as Stan Brat of Adelaide’s the Brats, the band of which this writer was also a member], were put out by small independent record companies or self-released and thus extremely hard, not to mention expensive, to find. Hence, these early compilations gave modern fans of psychedelia a chance to hear these songs, often for the first time, and to rescue them from oblivion, a job they seem to have done successfully when one looks at the growing number of such Aussie psych compilations today. Staying in that same Australian vein, we also played from the limited edition vinyl double-LP of 2013’s great “Nuggets : Antipodean Interpolations of the First Psychedelic Era” of current Australian artists playing versions of the original “Nuggets” compilation of 1972 and which features 7 more tracks than the CD version. Needless to say there was also music from diverse sources and eras such as songs by Pinkunoizu, Permanent Clear Light, the Luck of Eden Hall, Vibravoid and others as is our wont. So, until next week.....
