Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

And after an absence of nearly 3 months, The Cat finally returns to the airwaves, though without husband and partner-in-music, Peter Brat, who tragically passed away in July. All those who knew The Brat, whether personally, or by association with Three D Radio’s “Technicolour Dreaming”, “Obscured by …”, or his musical career, will surely agree that his death is great loss to music of all kinds, and especially his particular love, anything that could remotely be construed as psychedelic

Hats off to Harry and Michael Hunter, who have been keeping the Technicolour Dreaming driver’s seat warm this past couple of months & doing a fine job- the show must go on!

Needless to say, the “comeback show” featured many Cat and Brat faves from round the world, including The Fast Camels, Jim Noir, Nick Nicely, Thee Oh Sees, Vibravoid and Dolly Rocker Movement from the past decade, Roxy Music and Brian Eno from the 70’s, and many more. Particularly exciting is the news that Moon Duo will finally be playing in Adelaide in November, after their disappointing cancellation as the support for John Spencer Blues Explosion a while back. Hopefully an interview with Riley and Sanae is in the works when they get here - fingers crossed !

So …. until next week, here is the playlist plus associated visuals..... including footage of The Pretty Things performing “SF Sorrow” for the first time in its entirety, at Abbey Road Studios in 1998.

Technicolour Dreaming

Our Compilation of the Week for this edition was “A Forest of Goldtops in the Land of Oz” plus its companion volume, “Datura Dreamtime”, a 2-CD series of Australian psychedelia put out in very limited numbers in 1997 and 1999 respectively. They are classed as “unofficial” releases, but most of the songs are long deleted, unknown or very rare, and though a few, by such artists as the Twilights and Bobby & Laurie were on major labels, most, for instance by Glass Web [whose bass-player, incidentally, later found some reknown as Stan Brat of Adelaide’s the Brats, the band of which this writer was also a member], were put out by small independent record companies or self-released and thus extremely hard, not to mention expensive, to find. Hence, these early compilations gave modern fans of psychedelia a chance to hear these songs, often for the first time, and to rescue them from oblivion, a job they seem to have done successfully when one looks at the growing number of such Aussie psych compilations today. Staying in that same Australian vein, we also played from the limited edition vinyl double-LP of 2013’s great “Nuggets : Antipodean Interpolations of the First Psychedelic Era” of current Australian artists playing versions of the original “Nuggets” compilation of 1972 and which features 7 more tracks than the CD version. Needless to say there was also music from diverse sources and eras such as songs by Pinkunoizu, Permanent Clear Light, the Luck of Eden Hall, Vibravoid and others as is our wont. So, until next week.....

Technicolour Dreaming

We began the show with one of our favourite recent earworms, the wonderful “Persuaded” by Groovy Uncle which features the Shirley Bassey-style voice of new recruit, Miss Modus... great stuff! From there we ventured into the usual mix of old and new, soft and loud, here and overseas, plus a few semi-obscurities such as Sapphire Thinkers , Space Yacob and the Giant Yeti and the Glass Family to shake things up. We also said “Vale!” to Kim Fowley and Leonard Nimoy aka Mr Spock who both passed away recently, before moving on with our “Compilation [boxset] of the Week”, namely “Children of Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the Second Psychedelic Era, 1976–1995”, the third in the “Nuggets” 4-CD boxset series put out by Rhino Records, from which we played a selection of faves, including the Church, which featured a very young Richard Ploog [ex-Brats] on drums... but only in the film-clips, since the song had already been recorded using the drummer he replaced. Richard of course went on to play for almost a decade with the Church during their heyday years, notching up many “best drummer” awards in the process. We finished with a trip back to the mid-70’s to the second Roxy Music LP and an instrumental from David Bowie’s brilliant “Low” album.... and regular listeners will know how much the Cat & the Brat love a good instro!! So until next time....
..... here is the playlist plus moving pictures, including that first “Countdown” TV appearance of Richard in the Church, plus Bowie playing “Warszawa” live in Japan in 1978, and the Times’ nod to cult TV show “The Prisoner” – enjoy!
