Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

And after an absence of nearly 3 months, The Cat finally returns to the airwaves, though without husband and partner-in-music, Peter Brat, who tragically passed away in July. All those who knew The Brat, whether personally, or by association with Three D Radio’s “Technicolour Dreaming”, “Obscured by …”, or his musical career, will surely agree that his death is great loss to music of all kinds, and especially his particular love, anything that could remotely be construed as psychedelic

Hats off to Harry and Michael Hunter, who have been keeping the Technicolour Dreaming driver’s seat warm this past couple of months & doing a fine job- the show must go on!

Needless to say, the “comeback show” featured many Cat and Brat faves from round the world, including The Fast Camels, Jim Noir, Nick Nicely, Thee Oh Sees, Vibravoid and Dolly Rocker Movement from the past decade, Roxy Music and Brian Eno from the 70’s, and many more. Particularly exciting is the news that Moon Duo will finally be playing in Adelaide in November, after their disappointing cancellation as the support for John Spencer Blues Explosion a while back. Hopefully an interview with Riley and Sanae is in the works when they get here - fingers crossed !

So …. until next week, here is the playlist plus associated visuals..... including footage of The Pretty Things performing “SF Sorrow” for the first time in its entirety, at Abbey Road Studios in 1998.

Technicolour Dreaming

Apologies for the late posting and abbreviated introduction ..... does “technical difficulties” strike a chord?  Perhaps more of a dis-chord!?  Anyway, this week we ventured into New Zealand’s golden era of psychedelia, which ran far longer than elsewhere, going  from about 1966 through to the early 1970’s, with a supportive industry  of small studios recording this output on vinyl, with most being distributed a large company, EMI and preserved for posterity.  Hence the large number of bands and songs from all over New Zealand to be found in the on-going “A Day In My Mind’s Mind” compilation series which we featured as our “Compilation of the Week”. Of course we also played our usual selection of old and new from around the world for your edification... so, barring any further technical problems, we’ll join you again next week, whilst in the meantime.....

Technicolour Dreaming

There were lots of “cover versions” on the show this week, including ones by bands such as MMOSS, Pesky Gee and the Scientists, to celebrate the arrival of the promo-CDs for the Fruits de Mer Records upcoming ‘September Collection’, centring on their “7 & 7 Is” boxset of seven vinyl 7”singles, featuring current bands each doing ‘covers’ of their favourite songs by a particular US 60’s band. For example, we played one side of the single by King Penguin who chose a pair of songs by the Byrds, and another by the Chemistry Set, who picked Love to cover – we’ll be playing further selections over coming weeks [for more details about upcoming releases check out the FdM website here] Another part of the new collection is the debut single release of SimonesMajic Ship” which we also played – it’s previously only been available on limited edition LPs so hopefully this great song will gain wider exposure now as a single. Amongst other releases we were pleased to be able to share was “Balloon Age” by New Electric Ride, a young UK band who are currently doing a major UK & European tour and getting great reviews in the process. The album is “on high rotation” in our house, as is the brilliant “We Worshipped Cats” LP by Swedish psychedelecists Les Big Byrd – both are serious contenders for “Best Album of 2014”! Another contender, and a welcome surprise in the P.O. box, was a pre-release copy of the latest Soft Hearted Scientists album “The Slow Cyclone”, which is due for release at the end of September; this Welsh band are a “Cat & Brat all-time fave” and yet they just keep getting better and better, so have a listen to them – you won’t be disappointed! Then there was this edition’s “Band of the Week” – the Red Plastic Buddha – who hail from Chicago in the US and who have been making great music for nearly ten years, with their latest LP, “Songs For Mara”, about to be released and hopefully gaining them new fans – one of the tracks we featured, “Little White Pills” is easily one of the catchiest songs we’ve heard all year and features Curvey [from fellow Chicagoans, the Luck of Eden Hall] guesting on guitar – great stuff! And don’t forget that next week is our annual “Radiothon” so please open your hearts and wallets and help support 3D Radio [and, of course, our show Technicolour Dreaming] by subscribing to this great all-volunteer community music radio station – we’ve got a sort of “best of...” show planned for you plus some cool giveaways as “bribes to subscribe”, so until then.....

Technicolour Dreaming

We began this week with a 2011 track by Jackie Paper [aka Josh Dowell from Philadelphia in the USA], an artist we’d not heard of before but discovered, like many others, through the always intriguing “Active Listener Sampler” series of free compilations emanating from New Zealand via Bandcamp – as we’ve mentioned previously, it’s a great way to find “new favourite bands”! Also featured this week were tracks from new releases by Mexico’s Lorelle Meets The Obsolete, California’s White Manna and Adelaide favourites, the Byzantines, soon to head off on their debut European tour which they’ve heralded by releasing a free digital demo single – hopefully we’ll have their guitarist Rhys on the show as guest-programmer/interviewee to share more details before they leave. Next, our selection for “Band of the Week” in this edition was Chicago’s the Luck of Eden Hall, who have won our hearts over the past few years with their uber-catchy take on modern psychedelic garage pop via their contributions to the Fruits de Mer Records series of releases, not to mention their brilliant albums, the latest of which, “Victoria Moon”, has just been released on groovy purple vinyl – LoEH... we salute you! We also peered into the past with a listen to 60’s singles by the likes of the Ivy League, the State of Mickey and Tommy and the Starfires, plus an obscurity by the Easybeats [who do have a 6-CD boxset of their albums despite our earlier statements to the contrary – our thanks to several listeners who gave us that info!] as well as another in that weird sub-genre of songs which emanated [primarily in the US] in the wake of those bizarre “Paul McCartney Is Dead” rumours in 1968/1969. Finally, we ended with The End and part one of the title track from their sole LP, the 1969 Bill Wyman-produced “Introspection”.  So until next time.....
