Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

As promised, this week I featured a veritable plethora of recent, new and soon to be released tracks (well, compared to previous weeks, a few, anyway!) from the likes of Technicolour Dreaming faves The Luck of Eden Hall, Kikagaku Moyo, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and Violet Swells. After a reasonably quiet couple of months, it seems that I hear word of great new stuff every couple of days. Could it be a publicity flurry in advance of Record Store Day on April 16th, or just a coincidence? Who knows, but it's great to see the vinyl resurgence continue to grow, though unfortunately slowed somewhat due to the major labels jumping on the bandwagon with pointless re-issues, and clogging up the pressing plant schedules at the expense of the small independent labels, who were the ones that supported them through the tough times.

So here's the play-list, with even more new stuff in store for the next show...

Technicolour Dreaming

We began this week with a 2011 track by Jackie Paper [aka Josh Dowell from Philadelphia in the USA], an artist we’d not heard of before but discovered, like many others, through the always intriguing “Active Listener Sampler” series of free compilations emanating from New Zealand via Bandcamp – as we’ve mentioned previously, it’s a great way to find “new favourite bands”! Also featured this week were tracks from new releases by Mexico’s Lorelle Meets The Obsolete, California’s White Manna and Adelaide favourites, the Byzantines, soon to head off on their debut European tour which they’ve heralded by releasing a free digital demo single – hopefully we’ll have their guitarist Rhys on the show as guest-programmer/interviewee to share more details before they leave. Next, our selection for “Band of the Week” in this edition was Chicago’s the Luck of Eden Hall, who have won our hearts over the past few years with their uber-catchy take on modern psychedelic garage pop via their contributions to the Fruits de Mer Records series of releases, not to mention their brilliant albums, the latest of which, “Victoria Moon”, has just been released on groovy purple vinyl – LoEH... we salute you! We also peered into the past with a listen to 60’s singles by the likes of the Ivy League, the State of Mickey and Tommy and the Starfires, plus an obscurity by the Easybeats [who do have a 6-CD boxset of their albums despite our earlier statements to the contrary – our thanks to several listeners who gave us that info!] as well as another in that weird sub-genre of songs which emanated [primarily in the US] in the wake of those bizarre “Paul McCartney Is Dead” rumours in 1968/1969. Finally, we ended with The End and part one of the title track from their sole LP, the 1969 Bill Wyman-produced “Introspection”.  So until next time.....

Technicolour Dreaming

Perusing the ‘New Releases  section of the Three D library, we discovered the new Black Angels’ album had arrived – and with only a few weeks until the annual ‘Austin Psych Fest’, of which they are the primary organisers, we naturally felt we should give it an airing, plus play a couple of the other bands of similar ilk such as Permanent Clear Light and Ringo Deathstarr, as well as Adelaide’s own Ride Into The Sun, spinning the b-side of their new single, which is being launched this week in Adelaide. From there it was a mixture of newer music from the likes of Cate le Bon, Decoys and Los Straightjackets and a fair smattering of 60’s magic by bands such as the Strawberry Alarm Clock, July and the Avengers. We also played a cool 1967 single by Mark Radice which caught our attention recently. Though only 10 years old, he wrote, performed and produced it himself – later in life he went on to tour with Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, Johnny Mathis and many others before finding fame as ‘Elmo’ on TV’s ‘Sesame Street’, thus going from child entertainer to children’s entertainer! We then spun some more UK and European psych singles before featuring a classic piece by one of our favourite bands of the 1970’s, the Sensational Alex Harvey Band, to wrap up the show.... all brought to you by the Cat and Brat on Adelaide’s 3D Radio......
