Sitars, theremin and mellotron, backwards guitar, phasing and fuzz, fringes and mohawks, paisley, black, velvet and leather, feedback, bass and drone, beads, berets and safety-pins, Shindig! and Creem, 3 chord wonders, teenage symphonies and snarl, Rickenbacker, Farfisa and 4-track recorders... onstage at CBGB's, Max's Kansas City or the Trip, the Roundhouse, the 100 Club or the Crystal Ballroom, Catcher's, Big Daddy's or the Squatters Arms.... and the Cat and the Brat on 3D Radio!
Three D Radio announcer, MeganCat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat)lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula. Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs onThree D Radio 93.7fm, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station. Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming", watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage, surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

In an effort to get this long-overdue playlist posted, I'll skip the long, drawn-out intro, and let the music, and the moving pictures, do the talking. The eagle-eyed among you will notice that I played a couple of the same selections from last week - accidentally, I assure you! So until next week...

As promised, this week I featured a veritable plethora of recent, new and soon to be released tracks (well, compared to previous weeks, a few, anyway!) from the likes of Technicolour Dreaming faves The Luck of Eden Hall, Kikagaku Moyo, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and Violet Swells. After a reasonably quiet couple of months, it seems that I hear word of great new stuff every couple of days. Could it be a publicity flurry in advance of Record Store Day on April 16th, or just a coincidence? Who knows, but it's great to see the vinyl resurgencecontinue to grow, though unfortunately slowed somewhat due to the major labels jumping on the bandwagon with pointless re-issues, and clogging up the pressing plant schedules at the expense of the small independent labels, who were the ones that supported them through the tough times.
So here's the play-list, with even more new stuff in store for the next show...

I don’t know whether I was thinking on a subconscious level about Australia’s change of Prime Minister the previous evening, when making musical selections for the show, but the tracks by Scott Walker, The Lovetones, Jason Crest and Halasan Bazar & Tara King th. all seemed to fit the feel of the moment! I played a couple of recent Adelaide releases - Black Coral, whose EP, “The Big Nothing” came out in August, and the very new, very exclusive “Ya Dig?” EP by Snobby Oxalis; plus a good assortment of Melbourne bands featured also - Murlocs, Witch Hats, and the inimitable King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. A great melody has always been a Technicolour Dreaming favourite, with tracks from The Left Banke, The Turtles, The Monkees and The Story UK andQuiltallfitting the bill nicely, and proving that there are still bands today carrying on the tradition. Speaking of The Turtles, I’ve included a clip from the trailer of “Guide for the Married Man”, their second foray into the land of movie music, the first being a track for the 1966 movie “Out of Sight” a spoof of "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." - look it up, it’s so bad it’s good!
…so here’s the playlist for the show, with (a hell of a lot of) associated visuals…
The Lovetones - Genius ("Meditations" 2006 Australia)
The Story UK - A Stone's Throw Away ("A Joy Ride on Memory Lane" 2011 UK)

Jason Crest - Black Mass ( 7” single b-side [to “A Place in the Sun”] 1969 UK)
Snobby Oxalis - Kings of Seaford ("Ya Dig? EP 2015 Adelaide, Australia)
Octopus Syng - It's Not a Coincidence ("Reverberating Garden Number 7" 2014 Finland)
Black Coral - Chemical Reasoning ("Big Nothing" EP 2015 Adelaide, Australia)
Halasan Bazar and Tara King th. - Below Your Deepest Expectations ("8" 2014 Denmark/France)

We began this week’s edition with a
tribute to the late Ian McLagan,
keyboard-player extraordinaire with the Small Faces,
and, later, the Faces.... plus appearing on a
plethora of other bands’ records as an ‘in-demand’ sessioneer and playing ‘live’
until now, being about to tour with Nick Lowe. I was fortunate enough to see him play with the Small Faces during their notorious Australian
tour with the Who... it was one of the first
concerts I went to and, as a piano-player myself, his commanding style certainly
made a big impression! A brilliant
career – he will be missed! We continued our 60’s venture for a while with the Twilights and Ultimate
Spinach, plus a great version of the “Avengers’
Theme” by Icarus Peel, before
returning to present day Adelaide with the Archers
and then veering off into our usual forage through the world of psychedelia and
associated obscurities. Towards the end of the show we featured King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard as our “Band of the Week”... they are a great band whose
career we have followed since the early days in Geelong until their recent
successes in Europe and the UK, where they have been signed by the prestigious “Heavenly” label for the release of their
much-anticipated new album. Good on ‘em!! We finished with Brittany
psychedelecists Sudden Death of Stars whose
latest album rewards with each listening – a gem, and certainly a contender for
our “releases of 2014” list. Until next week then.....
