Sitars, theremin and mellotron, backwards guitar, phasing and fuzz, fringes and mohawks, paisley, black, velvet and leather, feedback, bass and drone, beads, berets and safety-pins, Shindig! and Creem, 3 chord wonders, teenage symphonies and snarl, Rickenbacker, Farfisa and 4-track recorders... onstage at CBGB's, Max's Kansas City or the Trip, the Roundhouse, the 100 Club or the Crystal Ballroom, Catcher's, Big Daddy's or the Squatters Arms.... and the Cat and the Brat on 3D Radio!
Three D Radio announcer, MeganCat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat)lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula. Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs onThree D Radio 93.7fm, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station. Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming", watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage, surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

An appropriate first track - "I Been Gone", cos I certainly have been...The Cat is back!! I've been on-air for the most part during my on-line absence, but the pressures of work, and the Christmas / New Year's "busy season" means that I've had extremely limited time lately to devote to the blog. When you need to weigh up whether you have time for finding more film-clips or making sure you've got clean clothes for work in the morning, which is only a few hours away, somethings gotta give! So here's the first post since late November last year (is it that long already?), with more to come soon- enjoy!

I seem to have a penchant for playing songs, albums, and even bands with extremely long titles - an occupational hazard when it comes to announcing them without tripping over my tongue. The prize for the longest title of a release this week (but only just) goes to one of Fruits De Mer's latest batch of coloured 7 inch's - "The Fruits de Mer Records Guide to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"(phew!), featuring three very different interpretations of the classic sci-fi TV show theme "Journey of the Sorcerer"(written by The Eagles, no less!) by Astralasia, The Blue Giant Zeta Puppies, and Icarus Peel. Another new one from FdM is Vibravoid's take on the Iron Butterfly classic "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" - all 15 minutes' worth, handily split into two-parts, all the better to fit on a 7" (I only played Part 1, I'm sure much to the relief of some listeners!). A pre-release track from Elephant Stone'slong-awaited album "Ship Of Fools"(due out in September) was a welcome teaser; and the brand-spanking new debut from Brisbane's Sacred Shrines, "Come Down From the Mountain"exceeded expectations. I wonder what's in store next week...??

I was very happy to hear from the guys in Swiss band Borderline Symphony recently - they finally have a brand new, self-titled album out, their first full length release after a number of EPs, so I just had to help spread the word by playing one track each from the new "Borderline Symphony" LP and the older "EP 1". The band is unique in that they sing in German, Italian and English, and in my humble opinion, they're a cross between modern psych-pop and an almost medieval sound - check them out, and you'll see what I mean. I also flogged Dig The Fuzz Records groovy compilation "Astonishing Sound Show Stories Volume 1", with quite a few tracks getting on the playlist this week; they've just released Volume 2, which is heading my way from Spain, so I should have some more to playing in coming weeks ... hope you enjoy my selections below...

It was one of those weeks when
our P.O. box was inundated with new releases and a few older goodies so we had
lots to choose from to play for you. From amongst this pile of CDs and vinyl we
selected new tracks from the UK’s Wicked Whispers,
Three Minute Tease [featuring Anton Barbeau], Eternal
Tapestry and the brilliant triple-CD from New Orleans’ Chef Menteur, plus songs from the Wands, Surf School
Dropouts and Japan’s Sundays & Cybele

excellent double-CD “Psychedelica” series,
beginning with Volume One in 2006 and ending
with volume 5 in 2013, and featuring a
plethora of both known and obscure modern bands throughout, with many of the
tracks unavailable elsewhere. Most of the issues are ‘sold-out’ but can be found
on sites such as Discogs and eBay et al. if you search them out. We’ll be
playing more of our new ‘incomings’ next week, so until then.....

This edition’s “Compilation of the Week” is an ongoing series put out by
the UK’s Particle Records called “UPSIDE DOWN – Coloured Dreams From The Underworld : 1966-1971”, the latest of which, Volume 3, was released only a couple of months ago.
It is a cornucopia of mostly obscure late-60’s Australasian psych pop, with a
few “hits” and lesser-known songs by well-known artists thrown in. It’s a fascinating
glimpse of the New Zealand and Australian “pop scene” of the era, with
extensive liner notes accompanying each volume, and though we had some difficulty
finding film clips from the period to go with the songs we chose, hopefully we’ve
managed to give you an idea of those sounds. Furthermore, we featured other Sixties’
songs from around the world during the course of the show, as well as recent releases
from the likes of Melbourne’s Wesley Fuller,
Scotland’s Dr Cosmo’s Tape Lab and Iceland’s
Singapore Sling, plus Sendelica’s brilliant version of Pink Floyd’s “The Nile
Song”, taken from Fruit de
Mer Records recent Barrett/Floyd tribute
double-CD compilation “A Momentary Lapse of Vinyl”.
We finished with 1969’s uber-psychedelic “Cold
Spider” by C. A. Quintet from their brilliant
“Trip Thru Hell” album before saying adieu until
next week.....
