Technicolour Dreaming

The last show for May seemed to include quite a few bands from New Zealand, some of whom feature in the great compilation series "A Day in My Mind's Mind: 29 Kiwi Psychedelic Trips 1967-72" which is currently up to Volume 4. Psychedelia seems to have been a bit of a "late bloomer" on the Kiwi music scene, with psych tracks regularly in the charts up until the early 70's. Nowadays one of the cities to watch is Edinburgh, in Scotland - the new compilation "5", released by Dog's Got A Bone Records, is an excellent sample of a diverse range of bands, many unsigned or unreleased elsewhere - check out their sampler back-catalogue for more treats ... and this week's Technicolour Dreaming playlist is listed below:-

Technicolour Dreaming

I was very happy to hear from the guys in Swiss band Borderline Symphony recently - they finally have a brand new, self-titled album out, their first full length release after a number of EPs, so I just had to help spread the word by playing one track each from the new "Borderline Symphony" LP and the older "EP 1". The band is unique in that they sing in German, Italian and English, and in my humble opinion, they're a cross between modern psych-pop and an almost medieval sound - check them out, and you'll see what I mean. I also flogged Dig The Fuzz Records groovy compilation "Astonishing Sound Show Stories Volume 1", with quite a few tracks getting on the playlist this week; they've just released Volume 2, which is heading my way from Spain, so I should have some more to playing in coming weeks ... hope you enjoy my selections below...

Cherry Red's new 3 CD box-set "Another Splash of Colour: New Psychedelia in Britain 1980-1985" was a welcome surprise when I arrived at Three D Radio this week, box-sets being a particular weakness of mine, and The Brat was very fond of them, too - there's quite a collection at home! It features lots of familiar names, like Julian Cope, who I opened the show with, but plenty of forgotten about, or just plain obscure bands, so I'm going to enjoy delving into it's treasures over the coming weeks. It's the first day of summer here in Adelaide, but you wouldn't know it - cold, raining and generally miserable! Hopefully I managed to cheer up a few listeners with my choice of music  - including Harry, who was taking a well deserved rest to ward off an incipient lurgy!! This weeks show was a bit on the short but sweet side, only lasting for an hour, but I'll be back next week hosting the whole 2 hours for a change. Technicolour Dreaming

On this, our final show of 2014, we’d hoped to complete our “Best of the Year” picks in the categories of album, single, anthology, re-issue, compilation and boxset, which we started last week.... but because there are so many, we’ll probably be adding some more on our first show of 2015, because it truly was a great year for psychedelia. Indeed the past few years are now being hailed as “the third wave of psychedelia”, with a world-wide upsurge of young [and some not-so-young] musicians re-inventing and experimenting with their influences to make music that is all their own, not just a pale copy of the original 60’s garage/acid-punk/psych template, and a growing audience who are discovering these sounds, past and present, as witnessed by the popularity of “psych fests” around the world, while some bands such as Temples and Ty Segall [coincidentally our “Artiste of the Week”] are even gaining “mainstream” acceptance with commensurate record sales. So 2014 was an exciting year for new psychedelic music, which is reflected in the difficulty we had trying to play all of our favourites, as we mentioned at the start, because there were simply so many brilliant releases.  

So, all the best for 2015 to you from the Cat & the Brat and 3D Radio 93.7fm and let’s see if this “third psychedelic wave” continues to gather force in this coming year....
