Three D Radio announcer, MeganCat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat)lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula. Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs onThree D Radio 93.7fm, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station. Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming", watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage, surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Also featured were a selection of Melbourne bands, care of the "Magic Mixtapes from Melbourne". Just a normal show, really. Enjoy!!!!

Theshow started with a French-language version ("Noir C'Est Noir") of a Spanish hit ("Negro Es Negro"), which later became the disco anthem"Black is Black" ... cover versions seemed to be the only unifying factor for the next 2 hours of music, which stylistically wandered all over the place. I don't think that Technicolour Dreaming could ever be accused of being predictable!

I actually managed to stay for the whole 2 hours of this week's show, whichwas a welcome change, while Harry had a well-earned rest. Amongst the bands I played were The Moving Sidewalks, which included Billy Gibbons,later of ZZ Top, as well as The WC Fields Memorial Electric String Band,who were the first band to release Stepping Stone, the classic version of which was made famous by The Monkees not long after. Also featured were a selectionof bands playing at the "Going Steady Festival" at Jive on December 13 2015, such as local acts The Dunes, Black Coral and Glass Skies, and headliners Moon Duo.

There was a definite German flavour to the show this week, with Vibravoid, Klaus Nomi, and Can featuring (lots and lots of Can, certainly more of an airing than ever before, and very likely, ever again!) The latter two bands were choices of fill-in co-host Mike G, who certainly put a different spin on the second half of TechnicolourDreaming! A smattering of local Adelaide bands also featured, with The Dunes, Wild Rocket, Blood Plastic and an old but good one from Nuvo Bloc thrown in for good measure. The rest of the show was the usual mix of old and new from round the world … and following the Australian Playboys’ “Sad” with The Social Outcasts’ “Mad” was totally unintentional!

We began with a
long track from a current band, Eternal Tapestry,
and finished with another extended piece, this time by 60’s icon Ravi Shankar, illustrating yet another small
indication of the ongoing influence of psychedelia, beginning thousands of
years ago, as outlined in many books and studies, including “Psychedelia : An Ancient Culture, A Modern Way of Life”
by the late Patrick Lundborg, eminent Swedish writer and philosopher. But hey,
we’re here for the music and there were plenty of new releases for us to play
for you. These included the title track from the debut Wicked
Whispers album, Syd Arthur covering Led Zeppelin and new 7” singles by Quitty and the Don’tsand
Adelaide’s own the Dunes. Then there were
some older tracks including one from the 1967 debut of the
Glass Family through to Japan’s Ghostand onto Germany’s Vibravoid
and Hawaii’s Barbarellatones. Then
there was our choice of “Compilation of the Week”
where we went back to last year’s seven 7” vinyl singles boxset from the
brilliant Fruits de Mer Records, called “7 and 7 Is”, which compiled a group of current
bands covering a diverse bunch of 60’s bands such as the
Byrds, Love, the
United States of America and Moby Grape,
amongst others, all packaged with period-faithful artwork and using a mixture
of red, white and blue vinyl for the actual singles – great concept!
