Sitars, theremin and mellotron, backwards guitar, phasing and fuzz, fringes and mohawks, paisley, black, velvet and leather, feedback, bass and drone, beads, berets and safety-pins, Shindig! and Creem, 3 chord wonders, teenage symphonies and snarl, Rickenbacker, Farfisa and 4-track recorders... onstage at CBGB's, Max's Kansas City or the Trip, the Roundhouse, the 100 Club or the Crystal Ballroom, Catcher's, Big Daddy's or the Squatters Arms.... and the Cat and the Brat on 3D Radio!
Three D Radio announcer, MeganCat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat)lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula. Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs onThree D Radio 93.7fm, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station. Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming", watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage, surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Douglas P.
of Death In June fame joined us again as guest
programmer this week, on the eve of his North American tour which begins
shortly in Mexico [details here], playing some tracks from his recent “Live In Wein” double album. As always he
entertained us with anecdotes and stories including the merits of the Dave Clark5’s
contribution to “the British Invasion” and
their 1965 movie “Catch Us If You Can”,
which we all agreed was an unjustly under-rated 60’s classic! He also brought
in music for us to play by artists who have joined him on his various overseas
tours, including Ostara, Spitting At Pigeons and SpiritualFront. Also this week we played a
couple of previews from some of the forthcoming album releases by the UK’s
wonderful Fruits de Mer Records vinyl-only
label – one from Sweden’s Tor-Peders and
another by UK stalwarts Astralasia - you can
get more details at their website.Add some Byrds, Clinic, Antoine, a mix of new and old psychedelia and
more..... and that was the show for another week! We hope Douglas’s shows in the Americas go well and we
look forward to catching up again after his return.....
..... so here is
the playlist, with a multitude of visuals to enjoy.....
the Dave Clark 5
– Anyway You Want It(7”single 1964
UK)
Ostara – Paradise
Down South(“Paradise Down South” 2013 Adelaide, Australia)
The Scientists
are in Adelaide this week so we thought we’d feature one of their classic
songs, albeit one originally released as a single b-side, and this kind of set
the tone for the rest of the show. Yes there were some recent releases,
including songs from Pinkunoizu, the Luck of Eden Hall and Temples
and even pre-releases from the Barbarellatones and
the Dandelion Seeds, but the bulk of rest
were from all over the place, with tracks from artists such as Chad & Jeremy, John
Foxx, nick nicely, the Good, the Bad & the Queen, This Mortal Coil and the
Frantics, with Mordecai Smyth finishing
off on a suitably British psych-pop note.....
..... so here is the playlist, with some visuals to divert.....
