Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

And after an absence of nearly 3 months, The Cat finally returns to the airwaves, though without husband and partner-in-music, Peter Brat, who tragically passed away in July. All those who knew The Brat, whether personally, or by association with Three D Radio’s “Technicolour Dreaming”, “Obscured by …”, or his musical career, will surely agree that his death is great loss to music of all kinds, and especially his particular love, anything that could remotely be construed as psychedelic

Hats off to Harry and Michael Hunter, who have been keeping the Technicolour Dreaming driver’s seat warm this past couple of months & doing a fine job- the show must go on!

Needless to say, the “comeback show” featured many Cat and Brat faves from round the world, including The Fast Camels, Jim Noir, Nick Nicely, Thee Oh Sees, Vibravoid and Dolly Rocker Movement from the past decade, Roxy Music and Brian Eno from the 70’s, and many more. Particularly exciting is the news that Moon Duo will finally be playing in Adelaide in November, after their disappointing cancellation as the support for John Spencer Blues Explosion a while back. Hopefully an interview with Riley and Sanae is in the works when they get here - fingers crossed !

So …. until next week, here is the playlist plus associated visuals..... including footage of The Pretty Things performing “SF Sorrow” for the first time in its entirety, at Abbey Road Studios in 1998.

Technicolour Dreaming

Firstly we’d like to begin by saying congratulations to Cat & Brat faves, Chicago’s the Luck of Eden Hall, for achieving their Kickstarter campaign to raise over $14,000 to help pay for their tour of the UK and Europe later this year. They had the bookings but not much cash so we are pleased to announce that Curvey and his merry band of psychsters achieved their goal – they are still ‘travelling on the cheap’ so it gives some idea of the logistics and cost of a relatively small band to take their music overseas..... there are many Australian musicians who can no doubt relate. Anyway, we wish this very cool band all the best and so just had to play a track from their most recent LP, “Victoria Moon”. We did get a bit nostalgic on this show and played some older tracks by a few of our favourite bands, such as Temples, All Night Radio, Dark Ocean Colors and the Dandelion, as well as recent ones from the likes of the Black Ryder, Moon Duo and Melbourne’s Ben Mason. The 60’s were not forgotten either, with songs from the Rolling Stones and Mike Furber leading up to our compilation of the week, Psychedelia : an herbal mixture of psychedelic remedies and freakbeat fantoms”, a 5-CD boxset of rarities from that era. Four of the sides were originally issued on vinyl in the 1990s by the UK’s “Tiny Alice” label with the fifth being the intended but unreleased final release – now it’s a CD boxset compilation and a great find if you are into late-60’s pop-psych rarities from Europe and the UK. So, until next week, we bid you “adieu”.....
..... and leave you with the playlist and some visual accompaniment.....

Technicolour Dreaming

The Scientists are in Adelaide this week so we thought we’d feature one of their classic songs, albeit one originally released as a single b-side, and this kind of set the tone for the rest of the show. Yes there were some recent releases, including songs from Pinkunoizu, the Luck of Eden Hall and Temples and even pre-releases from the Barbarellatones and the Dandelion Seeds, but the bulk of rest were from all over the place, with tracks from artists such as Chad & Jeremy, John Foxx, nick nicely, the Good, the Bad & the Queen, This Mortal Coil and the Frantics, with Mordecai Smyth finishing off on a suitably British psych-pop note.....

Technicolour Dreaming

It’s been a while since we played a song-suite, so the five tracks that compose the opus that is ‘In Held Twas I’ from Procol Harum’s second album seemed to fit the bill. From there it was off on a trip through eras and locales, fed by more of the goodies that have appeared in our post-box recently, plus a few old favourites like the Twilights, Eno and Jacques Dutronc. Highlights included songs from the debut album by Dean Allen Foyd, the Citradels, Beaulieau Porch and local heroes the Systemaddicts, as well as from older albums by Sweden’s the Works and criminally neglected 60’s L.A. garage-girls the Daisy Chain, plus a cool version of D.A.F.’s “Der Mussolini” by Green Hornet and a classic from nick nicely. Throw in the Wondermints, Jeff Duff, the Millennium and loads more and it’s another episode done and dusted by the Cat and the Brat.....
