Technicolour Dreaming

Firstly we’d like to begin by saying congratulations to Cat & Brat faves, Chicago’s the Luck of Eden Hall, for achieving their Kickstarter campaign to raise over $14,000 to help pay for their tour of the UK and Europe later this year. They had the bookings but not much cash so we are pleased to announce that Curvey and his merry band of psychsters achieved their goal – they are still ‘travelling on the cheap’ so it gives some idea of the logistics and cost of a relatively small band to take their music overseas..... there are many Australian musicians who can no doubt relate. Anyway, we wish this very cool band all the best and so just had to play a track from their most recent LP, “Victoria Moon”. We did get a bit nostalgic on this show and played some older tracks by a few of our favourite bands, such as Temples, All Night Radio, Dark Ocean Colors and the Dandelion, as well as recent ones from the likes of the Black Ryder, Moon Duo and Melbourne’s Ben Mason. The 60’s were not forgotten either, with songs from the Rolling Stones and Mike Furber leading up to our compilation of the week, “Psychedelia : an herbal mixture of psychedelic remedies and freakbeat fantoms”, a 5-CD boxset of rarities from that era. Four of the sides were originally issued on vinyl in the 1990s by the UK’s “Tiny Alice” label with the fifth being the intended but unreleased final release – now it’s a CD boxset compilation and a great find if you are into late-60’s pop-psych rarities from Europe and the UK. Technicolour Dreaming

Being Record Store Day later in the week, we thought it appropriate to feature a number of vinyl singles and LPs, past and present, so we dug out a few favourites and obscurities including a classic from Big Star’s first album, some Australian 60’s-era singles from the likes of Mike Furber and former Masters Apprentices guitarist, Peter Tilbrook, a French tribute to Dr Wilhelm Reich by the Zorgones and a cut from the brand new LP by Paul Messis, released this week on the UK independent label, State Records. We also featured some of the artists appearing at the upcoming Austin Psych Fest, including organisers the Black Angels and Adelaide representatives Ride Into The Sun, plus some classic pop-psych from the Association and the Seeds as well as tracks from current purveyors such as Vibravoid and Clinic. Regular listeners will be aware of our fondness for  ‘suites’ of songs [most recently one from Procol Harum] so how could we resist playing - in full - the ‘audio-storybook LP’ tale of “Eyes Like The Sky”, narrated and written by Australian legend Broderick Smith [Carson/Dingoes etc] accompanied by the psychedelic/spaghetti western/surf sounds of King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard – brilliant stuff! On a more sombre note, we celebrated the lives of Chris Bailey and Annette Funicello, both of whom passed away recently, by playing some of their music and video-clips – R.I.P. Chris and Annette!

Technicolour Dreaming

As we gear up here for next week’s 3D Radiothon 2012, we felt we should up the local and Australian quotient in preparation, which was easy since there were so many new releases fitting that bill which demanded to be played! There were new singles from King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard and the Demon Parade, EPs from a bunch of local acts including the Sunbirds, Steering By Stars and Sleeptalker, as well as albums from Wolfmother/redsunband offshoot Good Heavens and the Laurels. But it was not all new stuff... as always, we parted the mists of time and played lost gems by Lotus, the Psychedelic Furs and Echo & the Bunnymen, plus a track by the Popinjays from their 1992 ‘covers’ EP,and one from Canada’s High Dials, taken from Psychedelica 4, the most recent of Northern Star Records excellent compilation series before finishing with our current “Artiste of the Month”, the late great Baterz.....

Technicolour Dreaming

Once again the Cat and the Brat fossicked through sounds, past and present, for your delectation... beginning with the opening track from Earth’s brilliant 2007 album, we also played some Australian garage/psych from the Molting Vultures and the Sand Pebbles, a bunch of 60’s grooves from the likes of the Sonics and the Chambers Brothers, two distinct UK bands called the Moles separated by more than 40 years, a track from Quebec’s finest, the High Dials, plus a cut from the latest Deerhoof album before finishing with the Troggs’ first single...
