Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

After last week’s ‘technical difficulties’, it was a pleasure to have a veteran of the Adelaide music scene, Vic Conrad [aka Mr V] join us in the studio for a chat about Gray Packham’s new album ‘La La Land’, the latest release from one of his ventures, Walking Bird Records. The album will be launched at the Grace Emily Hotel on Sunday afternoon with performances by most of the musicians involved, both individually and playing Gray’s songs, and should prove to be one of this year’s live musical highlights, so get along if you can. We also featured a number of other Australian releases including those of Melbourne psychedelicists the Grand Rapids, Davey Lane’s new E.P. and the latest compilation from Geelong’s prolific Anti-Fade Records. We also played the A-side of the debut single by our Finnish faves Permanent Clear Light on the wonderful vinyl-only Fruits De Mer label, presented in a 3D pic-sleeve [glasses included!] as well as a slice of dreamy pop from the UK’s Amor De Dias plus, as always, a bunch of 60’s psychedelic rarities from bands such as Pisces, the Golden Dawn and Austria’s Hide & Seek. Technicolour Dreaming

Being Record Store Day later in the week, we thought it appropriate to feature a number of vinyl singles and LPs, past and present, so we dug out a few favourites and obscurities including a classic from Big Star’s first album, some Australian 60’s-era singles from the likes of Mike Furber and former Masters Apprentices guitarist, Peter Tilbrook, a French tribute to Dr Wilhelm Reich by the Zorgones and a cut from the brand new LP by Paul Messis, released this week on the UK independent label, State Records. We also featured some of the artists appearing at the upcoming Austin Psych Fest, including organisers the Black Angels and Adelaide representatives Ride Into The Sun, plus some classic pop-psych from the Association and the Seeds as well as tracks from current purveyors such as Vibravoid and Clinic. Regular listeners will be aware of our fondness for  ‘suites’ of songs [most recently one from Procol Harum] so how could we resist playing - in full - the ‘audio-storybook LP’ tale of “Eyes Like The Sky”, narrated and written by Australian legend Broderick Smith [Carson/Dingoes etc] accompanied by the psychedelic/spaghetti western/surf sounds of King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard – brilliant stuff! On a more sombre note, we celebrated the lives of Chris Bailey and Annette Funicello, both of whom passed away recently, by playing some of their music and video-clips – R.I.P. Chris and Annette!

Technicolour Dreaming

The Cat & the Brat were back in the studio again after a short break (and a big thank you to heather, a true 3D Radio icon, for filling-in last week under difficult circumstances – and of course still presenting a psychedelightful programme nonetheless!) with a special ‘birthday’ edition of Technicolour Dreaming, so we just played favourites, new and old, to celebrate! Needless to say, we only made a small dent in the list of afore-mentioned ‘favourites’, but it was fine to hear such classics as the Electric PrunesToo much to Dream...’, the StranglersNuclear Device’ and the MonkeesPorpoise Song’ amongst all the ‘hits-in-our-alternate-universe’ that we love just as much... as always it was a diverse bunch, taking in Marianne Faithfull, Germany’s Cobra Killer, Norway’s the Apricot and an absolute killer track from Adelaide’s 60’s outfit, the Southern Gentlemen, and LOTS more! Plus we had our new “Band of the Month”, namely the Dukes of Stratosphear, who of course were XTC’s very psychedelic alter-egos, and with their excellent box-set for us to plunder, you are in for some treats in the coming weeks!
