Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

The phones were ringing, subscribers knocking on the doors, volunteers filling out forms & taking details and payments.... yes, it was our annual Radiothon week at 3D Radio! The Cat & the Brat were busy playing a bunch of faves plus tracks from ‘giveaway’ albums, chatting to local musicians such as Brenton Manser, who brought in his latest album, and even managing to squeeze in a ‘live-in-the-studio’ interview with up-and-coming local band the Byzantines, who are releasing their debut EP this week. Whew! So we’d like to thank all those people who subscribed to help keep this great totally volunteer-run radio station continue to be independent and on-air – and you can still subscribe anytime... just go to the 3D Radio website and follow the prompts, and don’t forget that each subscriber receives a copy of the latest edition of DepthCharge, our annual CD compilation of Adelaide bands.

Technicolour Dreaming

So.... have you ever wondered if there’s a process we go through when programming Technicolour Dreaming, to select the tracks we play?  Though it may seem surprising at times, yes there is!! It involves constantly listening to music – new purchases, forgotten gems, suggestions from friends, and whatever the Pod-of-i selects for us when we’re driving. Lists are made and re-made, the bags full of CDs and vinyl are packed and ready to go, then off we set to Three D Radio. But on the way, something strange happens…. the evil Pod-of-i tries to tempt us away from our plans with tasty musical morsels … then a stop at the Post Office heralds the arrival of more music from faraway lands, further derailing our resolve to stick with our list. And upon finally arriving at our destination, a quick scan of the “new releases” section of the 3D library tempts us further, and our steely determination collapses like a stack of 7” singles falling off the shelf! So with best made plans laid to waste, we give in and play whatever takes our fancy, track by track for your listening pleasure…..

Technicolour Dreaming

We began this week’s show with some psych-pop, old and new, by such luminaries as the Twilights, Jacco Gardner and Dungen, then plunged into the late 70’s/early 80’s UK electronic scene, exemplified by artists such as John Foxx and Death In June, before heading into orbit with the b-side of the Space Agency’s new single. We had tracks from Hookworms and Baptism of Uzi, and then plunged back in a psychedelic haze with the Sky Falling and the Seeds, plus tracks from the debut Byzantines E.P. We paid tribute to the late Bill Putt of Spectrum fame and also to ‘lost’ 60’s song-writer legend Tandyn Almer, who passed away earlier this year just as a retrospective of his work was being released, before ending with another track from the excellent new Sonny & the Sunsets LP. That was Technicolour Dreaming with the Cat & the Brat on 3D Radio for another week.....

Technicolour Dreaming

We began the show this week with a prime example of 21st Century psychedelia by American band Eternal Tapestry. We then ventured far and wide for the next two hours, with a mix of singles and album tracks by bands such the Leopards, the Lee Kings and the Turtles as examples of the former, and the Barbarellatones, the Apricot,  Moon Duo and Jim Noir representing the latter. We featured a song from Ben Mason’s fine new album, another from the latest Mynd Gardeners release, plus the A-side of a very cool 7”single by the Space Agency which is due for release at the end of the month on Market SquareRecords [we’ve attached their suitably spacey clip!]. Throw in some Cate le Bon, a live track from Germany’s Vibravoid, a slice of French 60’s psych by Bruno Leys, a Nilsson single B-side [he’s on the cover of the current Shindig! magazine] and lots more, finish with a track from Lumerians [whose new album we eagerly await!] and there you have it... another edition of Technicolour Dreaming, brought to you again by the Cat & the Brat!
