Sitars, theremin and mellotron, backwards guitar, phasing and fuzz, fringes and mohawks, paisley, black, velvet and leather, feedback, bass and drone, beads, berets and safety-pins, Shindig! and Creem, 3 chord wonders, teenage symphonies and snarl, Rickenbacker, Farfisa and 4-track recorders... onstage at CBGB's, Max's Kansas City or the Trip, the Roundhouse, the 100 Club or the Crystal Ballroom, Catcher's, Big Daddy's or the Squatters Arms.... and the Cat and the Brat on 3D Radio!
Three D Radio announcer, MeganCat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat)lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula. Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs onThree D Radio 93.7fm, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station. Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming", watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage, surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...
Especially for Three D Radio's annual Radiothon, I was joined by Technicolour Dreaming alumni Michael Hunter for a special edition of "Obscured By... Technicolour!!!" We had a hell of a lot of fun - hope you enjoyed it too!!

Another of the Nuggets series of boxsets was our choice
for this edition’s “Compilation of the Week”...This time it
was “Where
the Action Is! Los Angeles Nuggets
1965-1968” which was released in 2009, in a hard-cover book format with the 4-CDs
slotted into the back cover – lots of very cool photos and articles with
detailed liner notes about each song and artist... and what great songs they
are! This is probably our favourite of the Nuggets
boxset collection [the 1972 original double-LP stands separately of course!]
because LA was producing a plethora of wonderful bands in this period, many
well-known, but most not, which in no way diminishes the quality of the sounds
coming out of the area however – brilliant stuff! Basically, if you can only
have one boxset, this is the one! Another producer of fine music is the UK’s Fruits de Mer label whose latest
compilation “Strange Fruit & Veg” is
packed with goodies. From it this week we chose a great version of theBeatles’ “Tomorrow
Never Knows”, complete with filmclip. We also featured an Australian 60’s
section with tracks by Ray Brown and Hugo amongst others, plus recent music from acts
such as Lumerians, the
Myrrors and Elephant Stone. So now, we
bid you “adieu” until next week, when we’ll have more psychedelia and
associated obscurities for your listening and viewing pleasure....
.....until then, here is
the playlist and some visuals to amuse you, including the Kikagaku Moyo “official clip” for ‘Kodama’..... enjoy!

Combine a very
hot day and car trouble... and it was
a somewhat bedraggled Cat & Brat who
trailed into the air-conditioned respite of the 3D
studio. Not organised at the best of times, our penchant for spontaneity was
truly tested, but despite a shaky start that was saved by some judicious selections
from the extensive Fruits de Mer Records catalogue
before we moved into tracks from a couple of our “best of...” selections from
last year and on to some new releases. With some 60’s pop psych, both released
and unreleased during that period, we finally led into our “Compilation of the Week”, the Chocolate Soup for Diabetics 5-CD boxset, the
first three of which were initially released on vinyl between 1980 and 1983 and
the final two in 2002, before the CD boxset was eventually issued in 2010,
complete with an extensive and informative booklet to both let you know about
the bands and details of the actual releases, not to mention the groovy
pictures! Finally we finished off by playing a 60’s classic by pop-psych song-writers
extraordinaire, Boyce & Hart and the
latest release of sitar-drenched goodness from Kingdom
of the Holy Sun... ahhh, a last blast of cool relief before heading off
into the heat once more! So, until next time....
