Technicolour Dreaming

I seem to have a penchant for playing songs, albums, and even bands with extremely long titles - an occupational hazard when it comes to announcing them without tripping over my tongue. The prize for the longest title of a release this week (but only just) goes to one of Fruits De Mer's latest batch of coloured 7 inch's - "The Fruits de Mer Records Guide to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" (phew!), featuring three very different interpretations of the classic sci-fi TV show theme "Journey of the Sorcerer" (written by The Eagles, no less!) by Astralasia, The Blue Giant Zeta Puppies, and Icarus Peel. Another new one from FdM is Vibravoid's take on the Iron Butterfly classic "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" - all 15 minutes' worth, handily split into two-parts, all the better to fit on a 7" (I only played Part 1, I'm sure much to the relief of some listeners!). A pre-release track from Elephant Stone's long-awaited album "Ship Of Fools" (due out in September) was a welcome teaser; and the brand-spanking new debut from Brisbane's Sacred Shrines, "Come Down From the Mountain" exceeded expectations. I wonder what's in store next week...??

As you can see from the playlist below, I have finally received my copy of the "Astonishing Sound Show Stories Volume 2" compilation. Most of the bands are so unknown and obscure that I couldn't find any clips for the songs I played, but there's some great music on this comp, so if you want to get a copy, you'd better get your skates on, as there's under 50 copies left. I've included the quite frankly, strange and bizarre, but entertaining promo videos for this release below. And speaking of strange, I had to include the extremely groovy Brigitte Bardot clip for "Contact", which pretty unusual, even by 1967 standards. Enjoy!

Technicolour Dreaming

Combine a very hot day and car trouble... and it was a somewhat bedraggled Cat & Brat who trailed into the air-conditioned respite of the 3D studio. Not organised at the best of times, our penchant for spontaneity was truly tested, but despite a shaky start that was saved by some judicious selections from the extensive Fruits de Mer Records catalogue before we moved into tracks from a couple of our “best of...” selections from last year and on to some new releases. With some 60’s pop psych, both released and unreleased during that period, we finally led into our “Compilation of the Week”, the Chocolate Soup for Diabetics 5-CD boxset, the first three of which were initially released on vinyl between 1980 and 1983 and the final two in 2002, before the CD boxset was eventually issued in 2010, complete with an extensive and informative booklet to both let you know about the bands and details of the actual releases, not to mention the groovy pictures! Finally we finished off by playing a 60’s classic by pop-psych song-writers extraordinaire, Boyce & Hart and the latest release of sitar-drenched goodness from Kingdom of the Holy Sun... ahhh, a last blast of cool relief before heading off into the heat once more! Technicolour Dreaming

We began this week with some modern psychedelia from Italy. Sonic Jesus released this debut EP on Fuzz Club Records last year and more recently have done a split 10” single with the Black Angels on the same label. They were just one of some great new bands we played on the show today, including Sydney’s Aether Beach and Los Tones, and the UK’s Violet Woods. Needless to say there were also a bunch of our regular faves such as Balduin, the See See, Singapore Sling and the Dandelion, as well as some brilliant music by the Rolling Stones, the Throb, the Bee Gees and others from the mid-1960’s, since acknowledged as ‘the first psychedelic era’. This then led us into our new feature, “Compilation of the Week”, which we debuted by playing a bunch of classic singles taken from that original garage psych compilation, the one which has since spawned a plethora of successors, namely the 1972 double-LP, “Nuggets : Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic  Era, 1965-1968”, which was compiled of course by Lenny Kaye, who later found renown in the Patti Smith Group, though Nuggets will probably be his real legacy, and thus a fitting start to our new feature.
