Technicolour Dreaming

We began this week with some modern psychedelia from Italy. Sonic Jesus released this debut EP on Fuzz Club Records last year and more recently have done a split 10” single with the Black Angels on the same label. They were just one of some great new bands we played on the show today, including Sydney’s Aether Beach and Los Tones, and the UK’s Violet Woods. Needless to say there were also a bunch of our regular faves such as Balduin, the See See, Singapore Sling and the Dandelion, as well as some brilliant music by the Rolling Stones, the Throb, the Bee Gees and others from the mid-1960’s, since acknowledged as ‘the first psychedelic era’. This then led us into our new feature, “Compilation of the Week”, which we debuted by playing a bunch of classic singles taken from that original garage psych compilation, the one which has since spawned a plethora of successors, namely the 1972 double-LP, “Nuggets : Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic  Era, 1965-1968”, which was compiled of course by Lenny Kaye, who later found renown in the Patti Smith Group, though Nuggets will probably be his real legacy, and thus a fitting start to our new feature. Technicolour Dreaming

On this, our penultimate show for 2014, we played some of our picks for “Song of the Year”, including Haleiwa “Wall of Blue Sky”, Heaven’s Gateway Drugs “Apropos”, Beaulieu Porch “View from Gainsborough”, Violet Swells “Jupiter’s Garden”, Groovy Uncle “Persuaded” and the Chemistry Set’s wonderful “Elapsed Memories”, plus tracks from our “Album of the Year” selections by artists such as Quilt, Octopus Syng, Lola Colt, the Paperhead and, of course, Temples great “Sun Structures” LP. We also played a track from our “Best Boxset” pick – the fabulous “Fruits de Mer label:‘7 and 7 Is’” vinyl box-set of seven multi-coloured vinyl 7” singles, collected in a beautifully presented box – for us, it wins hands down, though the “Postcards from the Deep” boxset of flexi-discs with accompanying postcards, also from the Fruits de Mer label, was a close second! Then there was our “Band of the Week” – Ireland’s brilliant Pugwash, whose songs have been played on this show since we discovered them back in 2005 with their fantastic “Jollity” album, and who are, co-incidentally, one of our picks for “Retrospective Anthology of the Year” with their new  “A Rose in a Garden of Weeds” compilation. And then of course, there were a bunch of past faves we wanted to play, such as Chad & Jeremy, Jacco Gardner, the Rolling Stones, the Seeds, etc. etc. simply because we could. So tune into 3D Radio next week for the second part of our end-of-year retrospective, but in the meantime......

Technicolour Dreaming

From Adelaide  to Ohio, California to Copenhagen, from 1966 through to 2013 and from French pop to Swedish psych via UK glam and assorted places/times/music between, with a whole bunch of new arrivals in the Cat&BratHaus letterbox to plunder along with some old faves to rediscover, this week’s edition of Technicolour Dreaming was a wylde ride, both to deliver & to hear! Standouts were the latest Luke Haines album, a children’s adventure for adults featuring Sham69’s Jimmy Pursey as a crafty fox, Gene Vincent as a cool cat and Nick Lowe as a wise old badger – needless to say, Megan Cat picked the Gene Vincent song as one of the cuts to play from it! Then there was the excellent new psych pop album from the Sufis which has been also hogging our music machine since its arrival and keeps getting better with each listen, though it’s been vying with the Citradels’ latest  and the Tages’ 1968 “Studio” LP re-issue for the title of “king of the machine”. Then there was Adelaide’s own LeighStarDust with a 2005 track [plus a clip starring loads of our friends], which we played to celebrate her upcoming nuptials to brillig’s Denni [who just happened to produce that EP] , new releases from Melbourne’s Flyying Colours and the Ancients, plus a track from Chad & Jeremy’s 1967 psych-pop masterpiece, as well as one from Asteroid #4’s debut way back in 1997 and... and... and...
