Technicolour Dreaming

We began this week with some modern psychedelia from Italy. Sonic Jesus released this debut EP on Fuzz Club Records last year and more recently have done a split 10” single with the Black Angels on the same label. They were just one of some great new bands we played on the show today, including Sydney’s Aether Beach and Los Tones, and the UK’s Violet Woods. Needless to say there were also a bunch of our regular faves such as Balduin, the See See, Singapore Sling and the Dandelion, as well as some brilliant music by the Rolling Stones, the Throb, the Bee Gees and others from the mid-1960’s, since acknowledged as ‘the first psychedelic era’. This then led us into our new feature, “Compilation of the Week”, which we debuted by playing a bunch of classic singles taken from that original garage psych compilation, the one which has since spawned a plethora of successors, namely the 1972 double-LP, “Nuggets : Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic  Era, 1965-1968”, which was compiled of course by Lenny Kaye, who later found renown in the Patti Smith Group, though Nuggets will probably be his real legacy, and thus a fitting start to our new feature. Technicolour Dreaming

Douglas P. of Death In June fame joined us again as guest programmer this week, on the eve of his North American tour which begins shortly in Mexico [details here], playing some tracks from his recent “Live In Wein” double album. As always he entertained us with anecdotes and stories including the merits of the Dave Clark 5’s contribution to “the British Invasion” and their 1965 movie “Catch Us If You Can”, which we all agreed was an unjustly under-rated 60’s classic! He also brought in music for us to play by artists who have joined him on his various overseas tours, including Ostara, Spitting At Pigeons and Spiritual  Front. Also this week we played a couple of previews from some of the forthcoming album releases by the UK’s wonderful Fruits de Mer Records vinyl-only label – one from Sweden’s Tor-Peders and another by UK stalwarts Astralasia - you can get more details at their website. Technicolour Dreaming

We’ve been playing songs by the prolific Victorian band, the Citradels, for several years now, so we were pleased to be able to do a phone interview with singer/guitarist/sitarist Tom de Vries, one of the three main songwriters in the group, on the eve of their upcoming show here in Adelaide this weekend – the first time they’ve ever played here! He gave us a ‘potted history’ of the band, as well as discussing their recording methods, their upcoming releases and their live performances, giving Adelaide listeners an idea of what to expect on Saturday night at the Crown& Anchor Hotel gig. Of course it wouldn’t be a Cat& Brat interview, though, without digressions and we enjoyed quite a few – ranging from their use of sitars on-stage and thus onto travels in India, to lamenting the end of Thee Oh Sees and the impact of their brilliant Australian performances over the years, and so forth. We trust that you, the listeners, enjoyed our chat as much as we did... and hopefully also, it inspires you to head on down to the Cranka on Saturday night and catch this great band ‘live’, with able support from Adelaide bands, the Dunes and Black Coral – a great lineup!
