Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

The new Brian Jonestown Massacre album came into our P.O. box this week so, needless to say, we felt it was a fine way to begin this week’s show before we moved into our trawl through the wonderful world of psychedelia. Also featured this week were tracks from a couple of cool Russian bands, Mystic Brew and the Spoon Box, with more to follow in coming weeks from what appears to be a very vibrant psych scene... special thanks to Dimitry of Mystic Brew for putting us onto some of the great bands there! Northern Europe also provided us with tracks by such Scandinavian bands as Octopus Syng and the Jessica Fletchers plus, from Poland, the White Kites, while from the Philippines we played D’Swooners, as well as a bunch from the USA and Britain including Flavor Crystals and Jeffertitti’s Nile from the former and Scars, the Open Mind and Schnauser from the latter, not forgetting Australia’s entries, Shining Bird and Subtract-S and New Zealand’s the Avengers, who did a great cover of “Listen, Listen”, which has to be one of our favourite 60’s classics! That’s your lot - another “Technicolour Dreaming” streamed into your ears, so until next week.....

Technicolour Dreaming

We’ve been playing songs by the prolific Victorian band, the Citradels, for several years now, so we were pleased to be able to do a phone interview with singer/guitarist/sitarist Tom de Vries, one of the three main songwriters in the group, on the eve of their upcoming show here in Adelaide this weekend – the first time they’ve ever played here! He gave us a ‘potted history’ of the band, as well as discussing their recording methods, their upcoming releases and their live performances, giving Adelaide listeners an idea of what to expect on Saturday night at the Crown& Anchor Hotel gig. Of course it wouldn’t be a Cat& Brat interview, though, without digressions and we enjoyed quite a few – ranging from their use of sitars on-stage and thus onto travels in India, to lamenting the end of Thee Oh Sees and the impact of their brilliant Australian performances over the years, and so forth. We trust that you, the listeners, enjoyed our chat as much as we did... and hopefully also, it inspires you to head on down to the Cranka on Saturday night and catch this great band ‘live’, with able support from Adelaide bands, the Dunes and Black Coral – a great lineup! But of course there was also a lot of other fine music featured on the show this week, including songs by the Violet Swells, the Jason Tryp Experience and Jacco Gardner, plus new singles by  the Allah-Las and Ride Into The Sun as well as older tracks by the likes of Scars, Dog Age, Normie Rowe and the Millennium.....

Technicolour Dreaming

Ahhhh... the Cat and the Brat were reunited on the airwaves this week after an enforced bunch of solo shows (two heads are always better than one!) resulting in a musical melange ranging from the neo-psych stylings of Prince Rama to  Josephine XV’s riposte to Napoleon XIV. We played two distinct 60’s bands called Kaleidoscope from two different continents, 80’s Adelaide rockabilly legends the Milky Bar Kids, the Mexican garage riot of Los Explosivos and was that an ode to decapitation by Dutch band Groep 1850? We also featured an interview with Melbourne psych-poppers Go Go Sapien prior to their Adelaide shows, including ‘behind-the-scenes’ anecdotes about the limited-release film which accompanies their new album, an homage to classic Australian schlock-horror B-movies... very groovy indeed! And we bid farewell to DieselWitch Will Kill You as our ‘Album of the Month’...

Obscured By...

At last, all 3 ‘DOTS’, Michael and Megan and Peter, were together again to present this week’s edition of “Obscured by...”! Needless to say, with the imput of all three hosts it was an even more eclectic show than ever, ranging from Abba songs done Ramones-style, a bit of Tiny Tim, the 60’s sunshine psych of the David and a sitar-drenched instrumental by famed session drummer Hal Blaine, the original composer’s demo of a Cindy Lauper hit, the first 7” by ‘lost’ UK post-punkers Scars through to the post-LSD ramblings of self-appointed guru Kit Ream and the musings of Mr Spock. There were a cool bunch of bands featuring this week’s letter I and our usual opening set of 60’s Australian recordings... all very, dare we say it, obscure!
