Sitars, theremin and mellotron, backwards guitar, phasing and fuzz, fringes and mohawks, paisley, black, velvet and leather, feedback, bass and drone, beads, berets and safety-pins, Shindig! and Creem, 3 chord wonders, teenage symphonies and snarl, Rickenbacker, Farfisa and 4-track recorders... onstage at CBGB's, Max's Kansas City or the Trip, the Roundhouse, the 100 Club or the Crystal Ballroom, Catcher's, Big Daddy's or the Squatters Arms.... and the Cat and the Brat on 3D Radio!
Three D Radio announcer, MeganCat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat)lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula. Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs onThree D Radio 93.7fm, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station. Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming", watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage, surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...
I seem to have a penchant for playing songs, albums, and even bands with extremely long titles - an occupational hazard when it comes to announcing them without tripping over my tongue. The prize for the longest title of a release this week (but only just) goes to one of Fruits De Mer's latest batch of coloured 7 inch's - "The Fruits de Mer Records Guide to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"(phew!), featuring three very different interpretations of the classic sci-fi TV show theme "Journey of the Sorcerer"(written by The Eagles, no less!) by Astralasia, The Blue Giant Zeta Puppies, and Icarus Peel. Another new one from FdM is Vibravoid's take on the Iron Butterfly classic "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" - all 15 minutes' worth, handily split into two-parts, all the better to fit on a 7" (I only played Part 1, I'm sure much to the relief of some listeners!). A pre-release track from Elephant Stone'slong-awaited album "Ship Of Fools"(due out in September) was a welcome teaser; and the brand-spanking new debut from Brisbane's Sacred Shrines, "Come Down From the Mountain"exceeded expectations. I wonder what's in store next week...??

Cherry Red's new 3 CD box-set"Another Splash of Colour: New Psychedelia in Britain 1980-1985"was a welcome surprise when I arrived at Three D Radio this week, box-sets being a particular weakness of mine, and The Brat was very fond of them, too - there's quite a collection at home! It features lots of familiar names, like Julian Cope, who I opened the show with, but plenty of forgotten about, or just plain obscure bands, so I'm going to enjoy delving into it's treasures over the coming weeks. Cover versions also abounded on this week's show - can't resist a good cover when it's dangled before me... so to work out who played what, peruse the playlist below..

Community Radio canbe fraught with challenges, not the least technical ones... I seemed to be beset with these from the start of the show, unfortunately having to cancel my scheduled interview with The Citradels, and things got worse from there, with CD players and computer refusing to work!. But no matter, it's all a challenge, and things seemed to come good in the end (but only after the hastily grabbed Scientist's 7" "stuck" due to overuse!). The show featured a Residents/Beatles double-play of "Flying", a hell of a lot of songs that started and ended in phasing, feedback and backwards effects, and much, much more. Who knows what will happen next week? While I ponder that question, here's the playlist.....

We’ve been playing songs by the
prolific Victorian band, the Citradels, for
several years now, so we were pleased to be able to do a phone interview with singer/guitarist/sitarist
Tom de Vries, one of the three main songwriters
in the group, on the eve of their upcoming show here in Adelaide this weekend –
the first time they’ve ever played here! He gave us a ‘potted history’ of the
band, as well as discussing their recording methods, their upcoming releases
and their live performances, giving Adelaide listeners an idea of what to
expect on Saturday night at the Crown& Anchor
Hotel gig. Of course it wouldn’t be a Cat&
Brat interview, though, without digressions and we enjoyed quite a few –
ranging from their use of sitars on-stage and thus onto travels in India, to
lamenting the end of Thee Oh Sees and the
impact of their brilliant Australian performances over the years, and so forth.
We trust that you, the listeners, enjoyed
our chat as much as we did... and hopefully also, it inspires you to head on
down to the Cranka on Saturday night and
catch this great band ‘live’, with able support from Adelaide bands, the Dunes and Black Coral
– a great lineup! But of course there was also a lot of other fine music featured
on the show this week, including songs by the Violet
Swells, the Jason Tryp Experience and
Jacco Gardner, plus new singles by the Allah-Las

As regular listeners to this
show are probably aware, the Cat & the Brat are
very fond of compilations, and this week saw the arrival in our letterbox of
the latest in the Psychedelica series from Northern Star Records in the UK. Like the previous
editions, the double-CD Psychedelica 5 is a
wonderful treasure trove of psychedelic-related music from around the world, so,
needless to say, we will be plundering its delights mercilessly over coming
weeks, starting, on this show, with selections from Iceland’s Singapore Sling, the
Lost Rivers from Germany and a cool slice of girl-group grooviness by the Silhouettes. This put us in the mood for other
comps and boxsets and so we featured songs by Truth,
the Majority, the
Ballroom and more, all taken from variously compiled sources [details
