Sitars, theremin and mellotron, backwards guitar, phasing and fuzz, fringes and mohawks, paisley, black, velvet and leather, feedback, bass and drone, beads, berets and safety-pins, Shindig! and Creem, 3 chord wonders, teenage symphonies and snarl, Rickenbacker, Farfisa and 4-track recorders... onstage at CBGB's, Max's Kansas City or the Trip, the Roundhouse, the 100 Club or the Crystal Ballroom, Catcher's, Big Daddy's or the Squatters Arms.... and the Cat and the Brat on 3D Radio!
Three D Radio announcer, MeganCat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat)lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula. Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs onThree D Radio 93.7fm, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station. Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming", watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage, surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...
More dreadful weather, internet outages, and a weekend away up in the big smoke to DJ at Wintersteady has meant a really big delay for this week's blog post...so no more prevarication, here it is, and on with the next one!

In this internet age, it never fails to surprise me how much music is now available from all over the world, that once wouldn't have been accessible unless you were lucky enough to travel extensively. Bands from Norway, Denmark, New Zealand, Belgiumand Spain all appeared on the Technicolour Dreaming playlist this week, along with the usual selections from Australia, France and the USA. But even the most obscure releases from those more familiar countries, especially the ones from the 60's, and once available only to dedicated crate diggers, can now be bought at most on-line shops. So enjoy the fruits of the computer age, complete with a few clips to give you the idea...

As promised, this week I featured a veritable plethora of recent, new and soon to be released tracks (well, compared to previous weeks, a few, anyway!) from the likes of Technicolour Dreaming faves The Luck of Eden Hall, Kikagaku Moyo, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and Violet Swells. After a reasonably quiet couple of months, it seems that I hear word of great new stuff every couple of days. Could it be a publicity flurry in advance of Record Store Day on April 16th, or just a coincidence? Who knows, but it's great to see the vinyl resurgencecontinue to grow, though unfortunately slowed somewhat due to the major labels jumping on the bandwagon with pointless re-issues, and clogging up the pressing plant schedules at the expense of the small independent labels, who were the ones that supported them through the tough times.
So here's the play-list, with even more new stuff in store for the next show...

And an extra little treat - another track from King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard's soon to be released LP"Nonagan Infinity" - it's called "People - Vultures".....enjoy!!
This was a very, very sad weekfor losing legendary front-men - first, the news that the Easybeats'Stevie Wright, later a successful solo musician in his own right, had died on December 26; and 3 days later we lost Lemmy, best known from Motorhead, but prior to this the Rockin' Vickers, Sam Gopal, Opal Butterfly, and of course Hawkwind. At least The Brat will have some more people to jam with! So of course a few tribute songs were in order, but of course the show must go on - with quite a few instrumentals - Wiskey Biscuit,Scantharies and White Candlesfeatured, plus some French tracks (which I'd been missing) from Jacques du Tronc, Bernard Chabert and Dansez avec Moa. There was also a bit of a "Garden" and "Violet" theme going on for a while there, too, and another track from Sir Psych & LA Al'sSmoking Trees. Plus the usual mix...
...so here is the playlist, with candy to feast your eyeballs upon!!!
White Candles - Behold! The Abstract Eye ("Flowers for Delia" EP 2014 Philadelphia, USA)

Some new releases, some recent
favourites plus a further bunch of “classics from the past” [in our minds at
least] all go towards providing the regular formula for an episode of TechnicolourDreaming, and indeed all are present and correct here
this week. In particular, we were excited to find in our PO Box the
long-awaited second album by the Fast Camels,
“Dead Rooms and Butterfly Dreams” as it’s
been quite a while since they delivered their brilliant 2007 debut “The Magic Optician”. Despite personnel changes
along the way, the band has continued to play live intermittently in their
native Scotland and elsewhere, but no recordings were released until now. It
was definitely worth the wait though, for, like their debut, it sounds more
enticing every time we spin it and we believe you’ll agree that it’s another
prime slice of 21st century psych-pop. Another such delicious slice
came in the form of a [very] limited CD edition of “The Soft Focus EP”, previously only available
digitally on Bandcamp etc, by Tasmania’s Violet
Swells. They’ve created quite a buzz with these songs, especially lead
single “Jupiters Garden”, even getting a
rave-up in premier UK psych magazine “Shindig!”
– not bad for a young band who only had their first live show a few months ago!
Also on the show, our “Band of the Week”
feature saluted Australia’s late, lamented Belles
Will Ring, whose three albums and assorted singles will continue to
enrich our musical vistas. Throw in some Kak,
Pere Ubu, Luna,Morgan Delt and a plethora of others, and that
was the show. Until we meet again next week .....
